The French do not eat enough dietary fiber?

    French citizens, and female citizens in particular, are not eating enough dietary fiber, according to a survey since 2009. This is sad news because dietary fibers are essential for healthy eating. Moreover, they reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, colorectal cancer and obesity.

    To date, the NutriNet-Santé survey has gathered over 230 volunteer Internet users and is still looking for new volunteers. According to recent analyzes, the current consumption of dietary fibers (18 g / day for women and 20 g / day for men) is significantly below the recommendations.

    It turns out that only 1 female in 10 and 1 male in 5 reaches the magic threshold of 25 g of dietary fiber per day, which is the recommended minimum. Ideally, people should be able to achieve around 30 g / day. Food fibers facilitate the work of the digestive system. We can find them in fruits and vegetables, legumes, bread, pasta and rice (from whole grains). Five servings of vegetables and fruit a day (approx. 400 g) provides approx. 16-20 g of fiber. Whole grain bread – up to 5 to 6 g per 100g. Just add legumes, whole rice or pasta to it, and we already have 30 g of dietary fiber per day, says prof. Serge Hercberg from Inserm-Inra-Cnam-université Paris13, coordinating the NutriNet-Santé survey.
