The four most common eye infections that cannot be underestimated
Inview Medical Publication partner

Eye infections are similar to flu or coughs – until they become really serious and hamper our day-to-day functioning, we don’t care too much about them. We usually see a doctor only when they make our vision difficult or become very painful. This is a mistake. How to relieve sick eyes? And why is it worth doing it at the initial stage of infection? We advise.

Eye infections – don’t wait until it’s really bad

The eye is a very vital organ. Only when our eyesight stops functioning properly do we realize how important it is to us. Some changes, unfortunately, cannot be reversed, so in the case of eyes, the most important is prevention and special care.

So when you develop symptoms of eye infection or discomfort, take immediate action. Don’t wait until severe inflammation develops or your eyesight deteriorates significantly. In the case of the eyes, it is best to nip any problem in the bud.

The most common eye infections – this can happen to anyone

Barley, chalazion, conjunctivitis and eyelid margin inflammation are on the list of the most common eye infections. In fact, every human being has met one of them at least once, be it as a child or as an adult. Most often, when they appear, we avoid visiting a doctor, waiting for the discomfort to pass. When we finally come to the office, i.e. when the symptoms become very persistent, the therapy usually includes the administration of antibiotics or steroids, as well as moisturizing drops to soothe irritation resulting from aggressive therapy. However, if we react quickly enough, it may not be necessary to use such measures.

In the case of both infections and irritations, the first aid is the antiseptic and moisturizing Ozodrop eye drops. Stronger irritation (e.g. after an injury or after removing something that fell into our eye), it is better to use Ozodrop in an innovative thermogel formula. Ozodrop GEL thermogel acts as a dressing for a sick eye. Its unique properties make it liquid at room temperature (below 23 degrees), which facilitates instillation into the eye. After instillation under the influence of heat, it immediately forms a gel, so it remains on the eye like a soothing patch. The use of one or the other agent may eliminate the need for antibiotics.

Why is it better to avoid antibiotics and steroids to treat eye infections?

Antibiotics have a limited spectrum of action, and there are also pathogens that are resistant to them. In such a situation, it is necessary to introduce further measures in the therapeutic process, and this extends the treatment. Not only that: omitting 2 – 3 doses of the drug may lead to the development of antibiotic-resistant strains.

The bad news doesn’t stop there. Antibiotics do not work against viruses and fungi, so when they are responsible for the infection – the therapy will be more prolonged or completely ineffective. In the event of a bacterial infection, antibiotics slow down the healing and regeneration of tissues.

Therefore, whenever possible, instead of an antibiotic, it is better to use a preparation with antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties, which at the same time carries no risk of developing drug resistance. Such preparations are ozone-based products from LipozonEye (Ozodrop, Ozodrop GEL, Ozolid, BlefOX). The scope of their action includes not only moisturizing, but also accelerating the healing process, as well as reducing the risk of scarring.

Let’s look at the most common eye infections to know how to recognize them.

Barley – what does it look like and where does it come from?

Barley is a cystic eyelid infection that manifests as an abscess. And this one has a shape and appearance similar to the grain to which it owes its name. Barley may develop on the eyelid or close to the lash line. Then it can cause special discomfort, because you can feel its presence every time you blink. Most often, the appearance of barley is the result of a staphylococcal infection.

There is a belief in folk medicine that the home way to treat barley is to rub it with a golden ring. However, this method is not a good idea, as well as squeezing the abscess or pulling it off with a thread. This can spread the infection causing serious complications.

Barley usually resolves on its own, so it’s best to leave it alone, while soothing irritation with ozone eye drops or Ozodrop thermogel. These agents also have a bactericidal effect, so they allow you to eliminate the cause of inflammation. However, if an abscess does not disappear for a long time, has a tendency to recur, or if several such changes appear on the eyelid, contact with an ophthalmologist is necessary.

Barley: what to do?

  1. Do not use home remedies – do not rub with gold, tear off or squeeze the barley
  2. The infection may go away on its own. Use antibacterial and moisturizing eye drops or a thermogel with this effect

Chub – how to recognize it? When does it require treatment?

The chute may resemble barley in its appearance. Moreover, it is often a change that arose precisely from barley. So it is a pus-filled lump located on the upper or lower eyelid. The chase itself does not hurt, but it irritates the eye, which is why it may be red. It can also tear excessively. At this stage, the best solution is to moisten the cornea with good-quality anti-bacterial ozone eye drops (eg Ozodrop).

This change, like barley, may resolve on its own. However, if it does not disappear within a dozen or so days, an ophthalmologist visit is necessary. When pharmacotherapy fails, the chalazion is surgically removed under local anesthesia.

Chub: what to do?

  1. Do not try to squeeze it – it can only worsen the situation
  2. Intensively moisturize the cornea irritated by the lesion – use antibacterial eye drops

Conjunctivitis – what is it and how to deal with it?

Conjunctivitis is relatively easy to recognize. We are probably dealing with it when the eyes begin to itch, sting and watery excessively. The symptoms are also accompanied by reddening of the conjunctiva and eyelid swelling.

Conjunctivitis occurs as a result of a bacterial, viral or fungal infection and is highly contagious. It most often affects children, but can also happen to adults. Conjunctivitis can also be allergic or fungal.

The first line of treatment for conjunctivitis is antiseptic and moisturizing drops or gel – they soothe discomfort and fight infection. However, if it does not subside within a few days, it is recommended that you contact your doctor.

Conjunctivitis: what to do?

  1. Moisturize the cornea with antiseptic eye drops
  2. If the infection persists for several days, see your doctor

Blepharitis – what is it? How to proceed?

Blepharitis is a disease that can be caused by various pathogens – Demodex and / or bacteria. The infection causes inflammation and redness of both the edges of the eyelids and the conjunctiva. The patient feels a burning sensation, itching and, as a result, usually quite significant discomfort. Often the first symptom of such an infection is tired eyes.

As a result of inflammation and blockage of the sebaceous glands (the so-called Meibomian glands), dry eye syndrome (ZSO) develops. It is manifested by insufficient production of tears or their excessive evaporation. As a result, the conjunctiva and cornea dry out, leading to discomfort, itching and red eyes. If left untreated, ZSO can lead to damage to the surface of the eye in the form of epithelial defects or even corneal ulceration over time. The best way to alleviate the symptoms of this condition is to eliminate the cause (infection) and keep your eye hydrated at all times.

The best solution to fight Demodex infections is to use preparations with high concentration of tea tree oil on the eyelid edges (e.g. I-LID’N LASH PLUS flakes) or for people allergic to tea tree oil, Ozolid wipes and / or BlefOX foam. During the treatment, care should be taken to properly moisturize and protect the surface of the eye, so that it is well moisturized at all times and protected against adverse external factors. For this purpose, the best solutions are ozone drops Ozodrop or Ozodrop GEL, which act as a compress for a dry eye.

In the case of dry eye syndrome, it is a good idea to visit an ophthalmologist who will determine the cause of this ailment.

Dry eye syndrome: what to do?

  1. Intensively moisturize the cornea and conjunctiva, do not allow it to dry out
  2. Determine the cause

It is worth mentioning here that all LipozonEye preparations (Ozodrop, Ozodrop GEL, Ozolid, BlefOX) can be safely used in children. The more so, it should be ensured that they are in every home and tourist first aid kit. Thanks to this, in the event of redness, trauma or after removing a foreign body from the eye, they can be immediately applied and the infection can be prevented or healed quickly.

Anyone can get eye infections. It is important to know what to do when they occur. Forget about home remedies and don’t underestimate your ailments. We have our eyes for life – you need to take care of them in the best possible way.
