The Omikron variant is flooding Europe – the number of cases is growing dynamically, especially in Great Britain. On December 18, the daily number of coronavirus infections in the UK was 90. 109. Based on the analysis of symptoms among people infected with Omikron, the authors of the ZOE COVID Study application developed a list of the most common symptoms that patients can expect.
- Originally detected in southern Africa, the Omikron variant is rapidly moving to other countries
- Last week, the WHO announced that Omikron is now in virtually every country in the world. On December 16, the first case of infection with this variant was also recorded in Poland
- The Omikron variant is said to be more infectious than Delta, which it is now displacing

Omicron Symptoms – The five most common symptoms
The ZOE COVID Study program run by King’s College London has been collecting data from people who have been infected with the coronavirus for many months. It is one of the best sources of information on the symptoms and course of the disease in large groups of people.
After the number of infections with the Omikron variant began to increase in the UK in a short time, the developers of the program decided to investigate which symptoms are now most often reported. For this purpose, they took a closer look at the cases from London (where there are the most infections with Omikron) and compared two periods with each other: when the Delta variant was responsible for the infections and when it was replaced by Omikron.

It turned out that the symptoms reported in the first three days after infection were virtually identical. Both Delta and Omicron infection are manifested by:
- katar
- headache
- feeling tired (light or strong)
- sneezing
- sore throat

What about the vaccinated? There are more infections after the Omicron
Ever since the Omikron variant was discovered, experts say it causes milder symptoms than the Delta variant. At the same time, however, it has been recognized as a mutation that needs to be watched closely. If only because it can continue to mutate, and therefore change in such a way that a large number of infections are accompanied by serious symptoms of the disease. Secondly – the virus can become a childhood disease (as discussed, for example, by Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski). Another issue is that the variant may escape vaccines.
“ As our latest data shows, the symptoms of Omikron are mostly cold symptoms, runny nose, headache, sore throat or sneezing, so people should stay home as it might as well be COVID-19. At the same time, we see two or three times more mild infections in people who have received a booster in areas where there is an Omicron infection compared to the Delta zones, but vaccines still provide effective protection, writes Prof. Tim Spector, creator of the ZOE COVID Study.
