Denmark took the lead once again. The first country in the European Union to drop all pandemic-related restrictions has just become the first country to officially stop COVID-19 vaccination. The Danes do not rule out that they will restore the program in the fall, but at the moment they see no point in continuing the vaccination.

  1. Denmark’s approach to fighting the coronavirus has recently raised a lot of controversy. At the height of the wave of infections caused by the Omikron variant, the country’s authorities decided to lift the restrictions in force
  2. Now the Danes are giving up vaccination against COVID-19. They argue for a high vaccination rate of citizens, a decreasing number of infections and hospitalizations due to SARS-CoV-2 infection.
  3. «We plan to resume the immunization program in the fall. This will be preceded by a thorough and professional assessment of who, when and with what vaccines to vaccinate »- said Bolette Søborg, Denmark’s chief epidemiologist

Denmark is satisfied with the epidemiological situation

From May 15, 2022, the Danish Health Department will stop issuing referrals for vaccination against COVID-19. As indicated in the decision issued yesterday, the epidemiological situation is so good that the vaccination program is suspended.

The Danes cited satisfactory vaccination statistics that show that around 81 percent of 5,8 million people in Denmark took two doses of the vaccine, and 61,6% also a booster dose. This is one of the best results in Europe, only Portugal is higher, with 85 percent after a full vaccination course. of the population, and the booster is behind him 61,8 percent. residents.

The second factor that prompted the Danish government to suspend the vaccination program is the declining number of infections. The downward trend has been visible since the beginning of March. Even at the beginning of this month (March 4) there were over 33 thousand. infections, but the next few days are already the level of a dozen or so and several thousand new cases. In recent days, about a thousand infections have been recorded daily (with an average of 15 tests performed).

Also, fewer people end up in hospitals. The average over the last seven days is now 749, of which 15 people are in the intensive care unit. Every day COVID-19 takes a dozen people.

The Danes do not rule out that they will return to vaccinations in the fall, when the next wave of coronavirus infections is expected. «We plan to resume the immunization program in the fall. This will be preceded by a thorough and professional assessment of who, when and with what vaccines to vaccinate, ”said Bolette Søborg, Denmark’s chief epidemiologist.

Let us recall that when the Omicron wave hit Denmark (late November 2021), the vaccination campaign was intensified, accelerating the administration of boosters and introducing (in mid-January this year) the possibility of vaccinating with the fourth dose to people at risk of severe COVID-19.

There has been no pandemic in Denmark since February

The Danes said goodbye to covid restrictions on February 1 this year. It was then that the last restrictions in force there were lifted. Residents were not required to undergo quarantine, wear protective masks in public places, show vaccination certificates against COVID-19, keep distance or limits in public transport.

Only recommendations remained, and there were not many of them: it is a recommendation to isolate yourself for at least four days if you experience symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection, and cover your mouth and nose when visiting a clinic, hospital or nursing home.

All of this was in line with the new coronavirus strategy, in which COVID-19 has been identified as one of many respiratory infections, a disease that is no longer “socially critical”.

This decision aroused a lot of excitement in the international arena, because at the time it was made, Denmark had 40 jobs each. coronavirus infections daily. The Danish government defended itself with statistics: a high vaccination rate and high social responsibility, including on compliance with the recommendations of the authorities and the observance of basic sanitary and epidemiological rules.
