For four days, the number of new COVID-19 cases in the province. Małopolska exceeds 2 thousand. per day. The chart shows that the situation is almost as difficult as it was at the peak of the previous epidemic wave in March 2021.
The disturbing trend is illustrated by the map prepared by Piotr Tarnowski, who deals with the analysis of epidemic data. Krakow is already black on the map. About 700 new cases of COVID-19 are recorded daily in the capital of the region. The Głos24 portal notes that the region does not see the decline in infections that was forecast. The Minister of Health, Adam Niedzielski, said at the beginning of the year that the increase in the number of infections is a “post-holiday anomaly”. Unfortunately, there is no downward trend in Małopolska so far. Moreover, on January 17, winter holidays begin in the region. The local information service reminds that it is Małopolska where a lot of tourists will come for winter holidays. In an interview with Wirtualna Polska, a doctor from a hospital in Krakow says: – Before Christmas it seemed that there would be fewer patients, but there are more patients. We practically felt no slowing down for us. There is a shortage of places in intensive care units again. It is possible that straight from the fourth wave we jump into a potentially much larger fifth wave of the epidemic.

Will the fifth wave really come so quickly? The mathematical forecasts of the MOCOS team from Wrocław show that it may start in the second half of January. Scientists expect that this will be the “merit” of a new variant of the coronavirus – Omicron.
The Ministry of Health announced yesterday that Omikron is already 10 percent. all cases in Poland. Most of them are in the province. Pomeranian and Lesser Poland.
In turn, experts from ICM UW predict that the wave will hit later – in the second half of February. What should be worrying is the number of infections expected. According to specialists, it may be even between 73 and 96 thousand. cases per day.
Such a large number of infections will translate into hospital occupancy. Although preliminary analyzes suggest that the infection with Omicron is milder, many patients will still need specialist help. It’s not hard to predict what will happen then – Omikron is more contagious, there will be more COVID-19 cases, more patients in hospitals. The threat of a “jam” in health care is something that medical practitioners fear the most.
The COVID-19 Real-Time PCR test can be performed at selected drive thru points of the Diagnostics network.
