The fifth wave – what awaits us in the near future?
In the forecasts regarding the course of the current wave of infections caused by the Omikron variant (which is already responsible for 97,2% of COVID-19 cases in Poland), a downward trend is currently visible. The charts presented by the Institute of Health Measurement and Assessment at the University of Washington (IHME) show that the peak of the wave in terms of the number of daily infections is already behind us. Now the curve will flatten out.
The downward trend is also visible in the number of hospitalizations, deaths and, unfortunately, also vaccinations. According to IHME analysts, the daily number of vaccines administered will be so low that the charts will barely wobble. You can find out more about the institute’s forecasts here.
So it seems that the fifth wave in Poland follows a similar course to that in other countries where Omikron arrived earlier than it did (about three weeks): it is short, but violent.

Is the pandemic really ending?
Recently, there is more and more talk about the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. When analyzing statistics and forecasts, one can really get the impression that there is a chance to return to normal. Health Minister Adam Niedzielski spoke about it at the last press conference, announcing the gradual and more “bold” lifting of the existing restrictions.
However, the words of the head of the Ministry of Health about the “beginning of the end of the pandemic” aroused a lot of emotions. They were criticized by a large group of experts (epidemiologists and doctors), who believed it was too early to give people hope for the end of the pandemic. Nobody knows whether the current wave of infections will not be followed by another or a new, even more infectious variant.
Another issue is the low vaccination rate of the population (only 58%) and the widespread disregard of sanitary and epidemiological rules, which translate into a greater (even 10 times) number of cases of COVID-19 than in official statistics, a large number of deaths due to infection SARS-CoV-2 and redundancy, in which we are at the forefront of the ranking compared to Europe.

– We allowed for almost unlimited exposure to the virus. Looking at what is happening, it can be said that we have been exposed to the conditions of natural selection. Effect? We have a disastrous record of deaths from SARS-CoV-2. No European country with a high level of social culture has as many deaths as Poland – said Dr. Aneta Afelt from the COVID-19 Team at the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences in an interview with Medonet.
It is also worth remembering that even if the wave of infections subsides and their number decreases permanently, COVID-19 will still be a challenge for medicine. – The virus will stay with us. It will cease to be a social problem, so the pandemic will de facto end, but that does not mean that people will stop dying. COVID-19 will remain a medical problem and vaccines and drugs will still be necessary – commented Prof. dr hab. Krzysztof Pyrć, head of the Laboratory of Virology at the Małopolska Center of Biotechnology of the Jagiellonian University, referring to the words of the head of WHO about the end of the pandemic.
