The female reproductive age has increased by two years. This could have health implications

American scientists analyzed data on the age at which women became pregnant over the past decades. It turned out that the term “geriatric pregnancy” has become obsolete. Late motherhood should no longer apply to 35-year-old women.

  1. Until now, it has been assumed that the best age for pregnancy ends when a woman is 35 years old. Later, the risk of complications increases and conception becomes more difficult
  2. American scientists have concluded that between 1959 and 2018, a woman’s reproductive age increased to 37 years. It has to do with with a shift in the time of the first menstruation in adolescents
  3. According to the American doctor, extending the reproductive age of women may have real health consequences. Hormones are to blame

Women’s reproductive age is increasing – new data

New data published in The Journal of the American Medical Association show that the reproductive age of American women is increasing. Until now, it was assumed that the upper limit is 35 years of age. Getting pregnant before that age had lower risks for both the mother and the baby. It was believed that before the age of 35, conception is also easier.

Pregnancy after 35 years of age has been termed “geriatric” and has been associated with an increased risk of complications such as miscarriage, premature birth and genetic defects in the fetus. Over the years, however, this age limit began to blur. Today, the term “geriatric pregnancy” is being abandoned in favor of “late motherhood”. Moreover, it is suggested that the term should be for much older women.

– Late motherhood is becoming a more and more common phenomenon – Dominika Trojnarska, MD, a gynecologist from the Superior Medical Center, explains in an interview with Medonet. – It is said that the number of pregnant women over 90 has doubled since the 35s. Generally, the average age of pregnant women increases every year. Even 30-40 years ago, women gave birth when they were 24 or 26 years old. Now this border has shifted towards 30. More and more often it is said that this “late motherhood” should apply to pregnant women over 40 years of age.

American scientists estimated that the reproductive age of women from 1959 to 2018 increased to 37 years of age. In their opinion, it may be related to the later menopause, as well as the earlier onset of menstruation in adolescents. The data show that over the past 60 years, the average age at which a woman reaches the menopause has lagged from 48,4 to 49,9. For the first period, it previously occurred at an average age of 13,5. Now it’s 12,7 years.

Higher reproductive age for women. What does this mean for their health?

Increasing the reproductive age of women may have specific health consequences. Dr. Jennifer Ashton, gynecologist and medical correspondent, highlights the issue of heart disease and cancer. In the case of the former, changes may slightly reduce the potential risk. The opposite is true with cancer – a longer reproductive period means a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer, breast cancer, and endometrial cancer. Responsible for this is greater hormonal stimulation throughout a woman’s life.

According to Dr. Ashton, changes in the reproductive cycle can result in symptoms such as fatigue, mood changes, severe pelvic pain and heavy bleeding. In the years leading up to menopause, menstrual cycles, sleep disturbances and hot flashes may occur.

When is it too late to get pregnant?

From a medical point of view, there is no age limit beyond which a child can no longer be born.

– Strictly speaking, you can do a lot. Even a uterus transplant – says Dr. Dominika Trojnarska. – But you have to think ahead, think about how long we will be able to be with the child, accompany him in life. It’s hard for me to say where this border lies. Anyone who wants to become a parent has to largely answer this question for himself.

However, Dr. Dominika Trojnarska draws attention to the non-medical aspect of late motherhood.

– Once, during a medical deontology class, a lecturer told us to analyze the situation when a couple adopts a child. A provocative question for discussion was: is he doing this to make himself happy or to make his adopted child happy? In my opinion, it is important to think mainly about the welfare of the child. And now, when should a woman not give birth anymore? In 2015, a 65-year-old woman in Germany, 26 weeks pregnant, gave birth to quadruplets. When her children come of age, she will be 83 years old. It is possible that even this moment he will not live.
