The exhibition Regained Femininity in Poznań

A unique exhibition – 50 photos, and next to them 21 stories of women after mastectomy and breast reconstruction – their attitude towards the disease, feelings, reflections … The photos and stories come from the Reconstructing Aphrodite Album released in the United States in 2001. The album is a joint work: photographer Terry Lorant, Dr. Loren Eskanazi – plastic surgeon and Joanne Sonn – one of the protagonists of the photos.

When a woman hears you have breast cancer, there is a complete transformation in her. From then on, it becomes part of the world of the sick instead of the world of the healthy. She learns about the disease and the countless treatments that have a major impact on her body and well-being. Doctors talk to her about relapse statistics and all risks. However, specialists do not tell her how she will feel and look, and how she is supposed to cope with life. It is extremely difficult to survive this period of treatment without feeling that there is a chance for a better tomorrow. On top of that, there are countless questions: Will I ever look normal? Will I still be attractive? Will I feel good again?

Recovered Femininity answers all of these questions with a series of wonderful photos of real women – women who boldly show us that there is life after breast cancer.

These 21 women, aged between 27 and 78, had different stories to tell – they have one thing in common – breast cancer – and that they all found a recipe to live and enjoy life anyway. All of them agreed to share themselves, their families and their stories so that other women would not have to go through this painful process alone.
