The emergency number 999 will be closed? The data leaves no illusions

The government decided to call the 999 and 112 emergency numbers. Before that happened, officials checked how long it took for both lines to receive reports. The results leave no doubt.

“The bill provides that the possibility of directing emergency calls from No. 999 directly to medical dispatching rooms, bypassing emergency call centers, will be maintained indefinitely” can be read in the justification of the draft amendment.

Twice the response time

There has been talk of switching the emergency number 999 for several years. This is what happened, for example, with the police number 997. From 2018, when dialing these numbers, the caller would not connect to the duty officer, but the dispatcher number 112. From January 1, 2024, it was to be similar with the ambulance service.

However, statistics show that this is not the best idea. According to the data, the total average time of handling requests sent to the medical dispatch center via 112 is 243,55 seconds. In the case of handling a report directly affecting the emergency number 999 – 116 31 sec. In other words, the call handling time by 112 is twice as long. Thus, the time needed to provide medical assistance is extended.

Why is it like that?

The person calling the 112 emergency number calls a dispatcher who has to ask a few standard questions and go through the entire procedure, which, although necessary, delays the dispatch of the ambulance and adds additional stress to the caller.

Waiting for the next connection and presenting the same facts to another person extends the procedure of receiving the summons comments Jarosław Madowicz from the Polish Association of Medical Rescuers in an interview with the market portal Rynekzdrowia.pl.
