The edge of the permissible: three new films of 2020

Three young directors (two of them are under 30) lift the veil over the world of the future for us, although the action of their films takes place in a recognizable present.

1. “Love for three” by Drake Doremus

It is impossible to stop resenting the titles that very good films innocently receive at our box office. In fact, this film is called “Beginnings, Endings”, it has become one of the favorites of the festival in Toronto, in particular, because it talks about ambiguous things with unjudged tolerance.

A story about a young woman who equally loves two categorically different and, moreover, friendly men and questions the very need to choose one. The 37-year-old director Doremus has accurately noticed the dramatic changes in today’s society, where ethics are dictated by openness and understanding, and not by archaic restrictions.

Cast: Shailene Woodley, Jamie Dornan, Sebastian Stan. Genre: psychological drama.

2. Eternal Beauty by Craig Roberts

She was 17 when her hopes for a modeling career collapsed along with the lost beauty contest, and the chosen one ran away from the crown with her best friend … She could not stand it – she fell ill. And for the whole of this film, we sympathize, admire, are touched by … a schizophrenic. She knows how to rejoice, she can live life to the fullest.

“Beauty…” is also about today’s attitude to boundaries: 29-year-old Welshman Roberts tells a story about the mutual permeability of the zones of reason and illusions of the “psyche”, rational and beautiful-fantastic, hope and reality.

Cast: Sally Hawkins, David Thewlis. Genre: romantic comedy.

3. “Add to Palm Springs” by Max Barbakov

This film became a sensation at the Sundance Film Festival – it was purchased for rental for a record $ 17,5 million for the local film market. Its director himself became a sensation several years ago – when he made the documentary “Mom, I’m a Bastard!” about being adopted as a baby.

Only such a daredevil could have had the courage to encroach on the laurels of the great “Groundhog Day”: the main character, who came to his friends’ wedding in Palm Springs, fell into a time loop and is now doomed to live the same day. The sister of the bride fell into the same loop, and now they are together while away the eternal present.

Cast: Andy Samberg, Christine Milioti. Genre: fantasy comedy.
