The drum of the washing machine flew off, how to fix it

If the drum in the washing machine does not work, and makes creaking sounds when scrolling, it may have flown out of its place. This happens for various reasons, which we will consider in the article.

You will also learn how to carry out self-diagnosis and fix the breakdown with your own hands.

Why is the drum falling off

How can you understand that the drum has fallen off in the washing machine? Do your own check:

  1. Open the hatch door and turn the drum by hand. If you hear a rumble and rattle – this indicates wear on the bearings. The same thing happens when you notice play by rocking the drum back and forth. That is, the drum has shifted or sank, as a result of which a gap is formed between it and the tank. This means that the car needs urgent repairs.
  2. Run the spin program in the washer at maximum speed. If you hear a rumble and beating of the drum against the walls, it was torn off the axis, or it hung on the edge of the shaft. There may be problems with both bearings and shock absorbers.
  3. Spin the drum by hand. If it rotates slowly with extraneous sounds, then it seems that it has fallen off the shaft. The reason may be in the drive belt: it could come off or come off.
  4. Look at the back of the drum through the bottom of the washing machine or through the back panel. If there are visible water streaks, workings, the cause of the failure is in the bearings.

To summarize and consider the main causes of failure with the above symptoms:

  • Drive belt problems. It could stretch or wear out.
  • Bearing wear.
  • Shaft deformation.
  • Breakage of shock absorbers or suspension springs.

Now you know what the problem might be. All options need to be checked.

How to fix a broken drum

There are several ways to replace a blown drum, depending on the type of failure. You need to start with the simplest.

Checking the drive belt

  1. Disconnect the machine from power.
  2. Having unscrewed all the screws around the perimeter, remove the back panel and check the condition of the belt.
  3. If it has flown off, put it on the motor shaft first, then on the drum pulley.
  4. To facilitate installation, when putting on the belt, turn the pulley by hand.
  5. If the belt is broken, replace it with a new one. Each product has a serial number by which you can select a similar model.

If after checking it turned out that the belt is in order, continue the diagnosis.

Springs and dampers

If the tank fell and fell into the body, the cause is a malfunction of the springs that secure the tank with the drum from above. When spinning and strong revolutions, the springs keep the tank from jumping off. If suddenly one of the springs burst, a replacement is needed.

How to align the drum:

  • One end of the spring is attached from below to the tank, the other from above to the body.
  • To remove the spring from the bottom, you need a lot of force.
  • Fix the tank at the top so that it does not wobble.
  • Pulling the spring down by hand, unhook its hook from the tank, and then from the machine body.
  • Do the same with the second spring.

To remove the springs from the top, place an object under the bottom of the tank for stability. Then pry off the spring hook with a screwdriver and remove it from the body, and then from the tank. New parts are put on in the same way.

After checking, it turned out that the reason was that the shock absorber (damper) was unscrewed or broken? Then it needs to be replaced.

In modern CMA models, a damper is used as a more advanced version of the shock absorber. Removing the shock absorber is much more difficult, because you have to pull out the tank. But to dismantle the damper in most washers, the front panel is removed.

What to do if the damper is broken:

  • The lower part is bolted to the body. Loosen this bolt to unfasten the part.
  • The upper part is attached to the tank on bushings with latches.
  • Neutralize the latches by sliding a nut or socket wrench onto the back of the hub.
  • Pull the bushing towards you with pliers.
  • Now you can pull the damper out of the housing.

In the future, they should be firmly fixed so that the drum does not break off during the spin cycle.

Bearing replacement

If the drum fell off the shaft, it means that the bearings have been working for wear for a long time. This is usually heard by a strong roar during the operation of the SMA. Therefore, at the first sign, you must immediately replace it, and not wait until the shaft with the cross is worn out.

We wrote about replacing bearings for different models of washing machines in previous articles, for example, “How to replace a bearing in a Samsung washing machine.” It will be necessary to completely disassemble the washer, and if the tank of your model is not collapsible, then you will have to saw it with a hacksaw.

When buying, take a complete repair kit specifically for your brand and model of SM. It includes two bearings and one seal. A grease for the oil seal is also useful, which will protect the bearings from water ingress.

You can do the replacement of parts with your own hands, if you wish. It is better not to lead to serious breakdowns and periodically perform machine diagnostics.

Now you know how to check if the drum has fallen off in the washing machine, and you can perform the initial repair.
