The drum is knocking and making noise in the washing machine, what to do

The breakdown of the washing machine does not happen “suddenly”, the user can notice its prerequisites in advance. If you notice that the drum is knocking in the washing machine, then an urgent check is needed, and possibly repair.

It is not necessary to delay the diagnosis, since the causes of extraneous noise in the SMA can be different, and this can result in a serious and expensive repair.

In what cases does the drum make noise and knock?

If you hear a knock and rumble when you start the Indesit, Samsung, LG and other models, do not be afraid. Perhaps you have laid things with sequins, metal buttons that can beat against the surface of the drum. Such clothes must be turned inside out before washing or placed in special bags.

Did you check the linen, and there were no such things? Then you need to diagnose and find out why the machine is noisy and vibrates strongly.

Finding the cause of the malfunction and its elimination

You need to pay attention when exactly the drum starts to make noise.

An imbalance has occurred

If the drum is rattling as it spins, it could be due to an imbalance. When few clothes or one large item is loaded for washing, in the process they crumple and fall to one side. Therefore, the drum begins to knock on the walls of the tank, which leads to extraneous sounds.

You can solve the problem like this:

  • Stop the cycle or pause. If there is water inside the washer, drain it.
  • To drain, open the small hatch – it is located below, under the front panel.
  • Unscrew the filter by substituting a container to collect water.
  • After unlocking the hatch, open the door and use your hands to evenly arrange the laundry.

Such a problem as imbalance is typical for old-fashioned washing machines. Since the manufacturers have provided the “Protection against imbalance” function in the new models.

Washing machine not installed correctly

In this case, the drum knocks when it picks up speed – for example, during the spin cycle. At the same time, a strong vibration is felt, the whole structure rattles. How to check if the installation is correct:

  • Place a level on the CM body.
  • Shake the body with your hands. If it sways and the legs come off the floor, then the problem is in the wrong installation.

The machine must be on a level surface with the feet firmly in contact with the floor. If you can’t get the legs straight, use silicone pads, which you can buy in stores.

Foreign object has been caught

What are the signs that there is an object in the drum:

  • The washer drum rattled loudly during washing and spinning.
  • When scrolling the drum by hand, an extraneous sound is heard: noise, ringing and knocking.

If even after cleaning from the laundry something rumbled in the drum, probably a coin, a button got in, garbage from pockets could clog. It is impossible to let the case take its course, otherwise it may lead to jamming of the drum.

You can remove the object by bending the cuff of the hatch or pulling out the heating element. In difficult cases, you will have to remove the tank from the body.

The same features are distinguished by the departed surge protector.

Since the filter is attached to the rear wall of the CMA housing, it constantly hits the tank during operation.

To fix the situation, you need to remove the top cover. To do this, unscrew the two screws at the back, slide the cover away from you and remove it from the case. Check the filter fastenings: if they are in order, fasten the filter in place. If broken, replace them.

Bearings worn out

What else can make a car creak when scrolling? Grinding and noise indicate bearing wear. And if you hear that the CMA is buzzing and whistling, this means that the shelf life of the bearings is already running out, and an urgent need to replace it.

How to verify a malfunction without disassembling the washer:

  • Scroll the drum by hand, if non-uniform rotation is noticeable – the bearing has begun to wear out.
  • Rock the drum up and down with your hand. If it moves away from the tank so much that a play (hole) forms, then the bearing is about to fail.

Replacing a bearing in a drum is an inexpensive but time-consuming repair. But if the replacement is not made in time, this will damage the tank and the cross. As a result, it will be cheaper to buy a new washing machine.

To replace the bearing, you need to purchase a repair kit and completely disassemble the machine in order to pull out the tank with the drum. If your car squeaks, do it as soon as possible.

Loose counterweight

Since the tank itself is light, counterweights are used to make it heavier, rotate uniformly, and dampen vibration. If the counterweight fasteners are loose and loose, you will hear a rumble and feel a strong vibration.

How to adjust counterweight:

  • Remove the front panel of the washer. Usually two counterweights are fixed on the front wall of the tank.
  • After removing the top cover, pull out the dispenser tray by pressing the latch in the center.
  • Loosen the screws that secure the control panel.
  • Unclip the plastic latches using a flathead screwdriver.
  • Detach the control panel and place on the case.
  • Remove the plinth panel. You now have access to the front panel mounts.
  • Unscrew all the bolts around the perimeter, remove the front panel.

Check counterweights, fix their fastenings. If one of the counterweights is destroyed (this is rare, but it happens with concrete stones), you need to replace it with a new part.

Shock absorbers failed

If the shock absorbers are worn out, or their springs are stretched, the vibration will not be extinguished during the operation of the CMA. You can hear something click like a ratchet. As a result of the imbalance, the tank rolls to one side and hits the walls and other parts of the machine.

Shock absorbers cannot be repaired, you can only replace them. To do this, remove the back panel of the washing machine by unscrewing the bolts around the perimeter. At the bottom under the tank are shock absorbers. Replacing them with your own hands is easy:

  • Remove the shock absorber lower mount. You need to unscrew the bolt.
  • To remove the top, you will have to pull out the rods. Attach a nut to the back of the stem to neutralize the latch.
  • Using pliers, pull the stem from the other side and pull it out along with the shock absorbers.

It remains to install new elements.

Now you know why the drum is beating. Do not start the problem, and at the first sign of a malfunction, inspect.
