Paracetamol and alcohol – it’s a bad combination
Dr. Karan Rangarjan is a surgeon and lecturer at the University of Sunderland in the North East of England. The doctor willingly shares his knowledge about medicine, debunks myths and reveals secrets about working in a hospital.
In one of the recent recordings, he warns that paracetamol should not be mixed with alcohol.
Paracetamol belongs to the group of non-steroidal painkillers, it also has an antipyretic effect. It is used for headaches, bones, joints, teeth, menstrual ailments or migraines.
According to Dr. Rangarjan, mixing acetaminophen and alcohol can have harmful effects on our body. The doctor explains that when both compounds break down in the body, they produce toxic substances. When they do occur, your body may not be able to produce enough of a substance called glutathione to neutralize these compounds.

What about a hangover? If not paracetamol, then what?
– When you take acetaminophen, it is broken down by your body into various chemicals. One of these compounds is toxic and can damage liver cells. To prevent this damage, the liver produces glutathione in order to be able to neutralize the toxin, explains Dr. Karan Rangarjan.
– Glutathione also neutralizes acetaldehyde, the toxic effect of alcohol decomposition. If you mix acetaminophen and alcohol, glutathione will not be enough to neutralize the toxic breakdown products of alcohol and paracetamol, says the surgeon.

When we have a hangover and a headache, Dr. Rangarjan recommends taking ibuprofen instead of paracetamol.
