During hot weather, it is worth taking care not only of proper hydration or wearing a hat, but also thinking about our skin. In summer it is easy to get abrasions, corns and burns that can heal for many days. We asked the dermatologist Dr. Anna Bachleda-Curuś from the SCM estetic clinic how to take care of the skin, what clothes and shoes to choose in hot weather and how often to shower.

  1. In tropical temperatures, be careful what material your clothes are made of. The dermatologist especially recommends the natural ones and tells you what to avoid
  2. The doctor recommends silk or cotton pajamas for night wear
  3. The expert advises on what to do to avoid breakouts that appear more often in summer

Adrian Dąbek, MedTvoiLokony: What materials should our clothes be made of in hot weather to make it best for the skin?

Bow. Anna Bachleda-Curuś, SCM estetic: If possible, we should choose the natural ones, although they are relatively more expensive. However, maybe it is worth – in the spirit of the idea of «less waste» – to invest in a smaller number of things, but of better quality. Clothing made of silk, linen or cotton will be perfect, but not all of them. As conscious consumers, let’s look for one with a quality certificate. Nowadays, the rules of production are very clear, so you can easily find this type of information. Fabrics obtained from wood cellulose also deserve attention, such as: Tencel, Cupro, Modal and Viscose.

It goes without saying that natural silk would be the best choice; it is distinguished by a whole range of positive features and benefits, which obviously translates into the exceptional comfort of wearing the clothes for which it was used. And here we can mention, for example, breathability, “breathing” and moisture-absorbing properties, lightness, tensile resistance, and the so-called. hygroscopicity, which means that the fabric “adapts” to the weather conditions, ie it will cool us in summer and warm us in winter. With all this in mind, buying just one silk pajama will be a great investment.

Moving on to the clothes that are worn “on a daily basis”, linen is recommended. There are many companies on the Polish clothing market that distribute such products.

It should be emphasized that linen is perfect for people who have a tendency to mycoses of the skin and recurrent yeast eruption. Yeasts are dimorphic fungi that are all carriers, but some people are more predisposed to the occurrence of yeast infections, due to sweating, increased body weight or the need to stay for long hours in windproof protective clothing, e.g. during work.

What to avoid

Mainly polyester satin. It looks airy and attractive, delicately shimmers and seems “cool”, but let’s not be fooled by appearances. In fact, it is very windproof and non-breathable, so it will certainly not be suitable for hot days.

And at night? What is the best way to sleep?

As already mentioned, it is worth investing in silk pajamas. You can also sleep in cotton clothes, assuming that we pay attention to its high quality. There are also linen pajamas.

Alternatively, people with a tendency to irritation and allergic dermatitis may choose Tencel or Viscose, which is pleasant to the touch. However, I strongly advise against artificial polyester and polyamide.

How to care for your skin in hot weather?

I always inform my patients that in hot weather it is worth giving up such intensive care, which they do every day in less demanding weather conditions. Many people use anti-cellulite cosmetics, anti-stretch mark creams, slimming cheese. However, this type of multi-component preparations, used in hot weather, can clog pores and, consequently, lead to irritation, abrasions, purulent eruptions or so-called potówek. Due to the risk of allergic or bacterial dermatitis, I would advise to discontinue this type of care during hot weather and rather “relax” on this topic during the holidays – in line with the body positive trend, but also taking into account strictly medical recommendations.

However, you can increase the frequency of peels up to two a week. There are no obstacles to make such a peeling preparation yourself at home – I recommend, for example, using products such as coffee or cane sugar for this purpose. After peeling, it is worth using light emollients, i.e. substances that have a moisturizing effect on our skin, preferably in the form of a spray or cream.

Importantly, in summer, we should also give up using very intensive greasing agents, ointments, except when they are used in the treatment of skin diseases such as eczema or psoriasis.

However, we all, without exception, use creams with high sunscreen, it is undoubtedly a must have for every cosmetic bag, not only for summer and not only for women. At this point, I can also add that longer clothes, covering the body, made of airy fabrics, protecting against excessive sun exposure, are more suitable for hot weather.

And how to take care of your skin in summer if we have various diseases?

In the case of a chronic disease, such as acne, when it is hot, I recommend that my patients stop taking strictly anti-acne topical medications, because high temperature and sunlight change their pharmacokinetics. As a consequence, it can lead to irritation and worsen the condition of the skin. However, in the case of a serious skin disease or acute inflammation, it is recommended to continue pharmacological treatment.

One of the biggest summer problems is sweating. Can we do anything to sweat less?

In fact, this issue is genetically determined, it also depends to some extent on our physicality. Of course, we can hydrate more, wear airy clothes, take a shower more, which will not prevent us from sweating at all, although it will certainly help in getting rid of unpleasant odors and removing toxins, bacteria, dust and dust from our body. that is everything that we are exposed to, in particular, when we spend the summer in the city. It is also worth mentioning that botulinum toxin has been successfully used in the treatment of hyperhidrosis for many years.

The Nuud brand offers Antiodorant, which is recommended as a revolution in personal hygiene. It does not prevent perspiration, but it makes the sweat odorless. You can buy it at Medonet Market.

And the problem of chafing thighs when wearing dresses. How to deal with it?

For abrasions, preparations containing colloidal silver are recommended, which are available without a prescription, so you can do without visiting a dermatologist. Preparations with zinc, aloe and panthenol may also be helpful. You can also use emollients in a protective and protective manner.

However, if the problem is more serious, then I would invite you to the office, because sometimes staphylococcal or streptococcal dermatitis may arise on the basis of such abrasion, which require more complex dermatological treatment.

And the best footwear to wear in hot weather is …?

First of all, summer shoes should be comfortable, airy and made of good material. Both open and closed shoes (e.g. linen espadrilles or sneakers) will work well, but if we put on socks, for example with sandals, let’s put on cotton ones. Of course, the best choice will always be shoes and insoles made of natural materials, which means not only traditional leather, because it turns out that those made in the veg style – from natural, plant materials, such as cork, coconut, are also great. rubber.

It is a kind of a sign of changing times in front of our eyes, in which pro-ecological awareness and attitude play an increasingly important role.

At this point, I would like to make an appeal to employers and other people who determine employee dress codes, so that – especially in the summer months – they should take all these factors into account and show greater understanding in relation to employees’ footwear choices.

What are the benefits of barefoot walking?

Where we can relax, walking barefoot is very beneficial, we can treat ourselves to reflexotherapy in this way. Instead of massaging the feet and pressing on specific points, we massage our feet by walking on grass or sand, and in this way we use the benefits of natural peeling.

How can I prevent pimples from showing up on my sweaty body?

First of all, you should focus on proper cleansing of the face and those areas of the skin that tend to develop this type of bloom, using delicate preparations. I recommend refreshing yourself with good thermal water. In addition, it is important to what we are already used to in the age of the pandemic – to avoid touching your face with your hands.

It is also worth remembering that when the temperature is high, we take a shower more often.

Can I shower too often?

You can, but we will not have to deal with such a situation when there is heat and high humidity around. When we feel warm or sweaty, we can take a shower even several times a day. All the more, people who work physically, especially outdoors, should wash off all impurities as often as necessary and possible.

In “normal” weather conditions – to keep the so-called lipid barrier – one shower a day is enough. There is some truth to the saying “frequent washing shortens life”, but it certainly does not apply to the quasi-tropical conditions that we see more and more in our country. Then we can even say that frequent washing extends our life. With contaminated skin, there is nothing to worry about the lipid barrier. Bacteria, fungi and microbes on the skin are no good. But at the same time, remember not to overuse strong detergents. You can effectively cleanse the skin even without gel or soap, just rinse the body with cool water.
