Although some scientists are devoted to researching the phenomenon of clinical death and near-death experiences, talking about such events is not popular among medics. Unless they themselves have experienced something that bears the hallmarks of a journey to the underworld. Surgeon Dr. Mary C. Neal of Wyoming, USA, had such experiences. A woman was kayaking in Chile when the accident happened. As a result, Neal got stuck near the waterfall and was unable to get out. She realized that her situation was hopeless.

Eventually, the doctor began to lose consciousness.

– I thought, “I should shout”, but I wasn’t shouting. I felt no pain, no fear, no panic. I felt more alive than ever before. I could feel my soul detach from my body and my spirit rise to heaven. I was immediately greeted by a group… I don’t know what to name them. People? Ghosts? Beings? I didn’t recognize any of them, but they were somehow important in my life, like my grandfather who died before I was born, Dr. Neal wrote.

The woman was not breathing for 30 minutes. She was resuscitated and finally regained consciousness. It turned out no permanent damage. There was also no brain death. The doctor, however, was left with memories of her “visit to heaven”. What’s more, she says, during a near-death experience, she learned that her son would die in a car accident in 10 years. And it actually happened.

Dr. Rajiv Petri has gone to Hell. He was under the influence of anesthesia

A completely different near-death experience concerns the anesthesiologist Rajiv Petri. The doctor could not count on the feeling of peace and certainty that everything would be fine. Dr. Rajiv had to undergo urgent surgery and was anesthetized by another anesthetist. After 20 minutes, the doctor regained consciousness. He could see his body, smell the infected wound, and even hear the jokes his colleagues told him.

Initially, Dr. Rajiv was convinced that the anesthesiologist had made a mistake in administering the drugs and anesthetized him with hallucinatory drugs. However, this did not happen – the doctor later personally checked the card. He already knew that he had experienced what others would call a near-death experience. In his case, however, it was not pleasant. In addition to exploring the operating room, Rajiv also had to deal with what he later described as very hellish realities with darkness, fire and dark beings.

Near-death experiences. What does science say?

There are more doctors who claim to have survived their own deaths. There are also those who choose to explore this topic after hearing similar stories from patients. The result is scientific research that aims to explain various issues related to this not fully explainable phenomenon.

And so, a survey conducted in 2014 showed that among people who were close to death, visions occurred in 17%. the whole group. They concerned people from various social groups – doctors, priests and scientists. It didn’t matter whether they were religious or not.

Among the described feelings, the most common ones were:

1. feeling that you can see and hear yourself outside your body
2. entering or going through a tunnel
3. mystical light
4. intense and mostly positive emotions

6. meeting with deceased relatives
7. decision to return

In turn, a 2017 study by scientists from the University of Virginia found that in people who claimed to have experienced their own death, memories were more real than reality. This was to indicate that they were not merely figments of their imaginations.
