I fell ill with COVID-19 first, my husband caught the infection from me

I read Jack’s story and decided to speak up because I have similar experiences.

My husband and I are after three doses of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine (last vaccination in December 2021). Nevertheless, we both got sick – I was the first one, my husband caught the disease from me (exactly three days later he had similar symptoms to me).

I suspect that I got infected at a concert that was held in a closed hall (July 14), but I am not completely sure. I was also in the office that day, and in the store the day before.

Anyway, three days after the concert, my throat started to scratch. The next day I got a sore throat, the next day I was completely crushed, tired and the temperature 37,5 degrees Celsius. The symptoms intensified so much that I went to the doctor.

The doctor did not refer me or my husband for tests. We bought them ourselves

I did the first pharmacy test on the second day after the symptoms appeared. The result was negative, so I was sure it wasn’t COVID-19.

The doctor did not refer me for tests, he recommended symptomatic treatment, repeating the pharmacy test and, if the test was positive, extending the sick leave by e-visit.

The husband, who a few days later went to the doctor with covid symptoms, also did not receive a referral for tests. We bought them ourselves in the pharmacy, actually only for our own knowledge. We might as well not have made them.

We had no COVID-19 for the “system”

We organized the isolation ourselves because we are aware of how quickly the virus spreads. Nobody was interested in whether we follow the quarantine rules.

We know many people who, having a runny nose or a sore throat, function normally, i.e. they do not isolate themselves, do not do tests.

My husband and I did not have any disturbing symptoms. The course of my illness was milder, but I still have symptoms of coughing to this day. My husband was ill for a shorter time, but his illness was more severe.

No services recorded our illness, so for the «system» we did not have any COVID-19. Nobody takes into account the pharmacy tests. We have many such cases among our friends.

Having trouble getting a test referral? The Ministry of Health responds

This is the answer we got from the health ministry after presenting Jacek’s story.

It should be emphasized that from April 1, 2022, the rules for ordering and performing coronavirus tests have changed, according to which a GP doctor may perform an antigen test, but it is not possible to issue a referral for a PCR test. Genetic testing can be performed as part of hospital diagnosis.

According to the case definition, a confirmed COVID-19 case is any person meeting the laboratory criterion. i.e. detection of SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid from a clinical specimen or detection of SARS-CoV-2 virus antigen (s) from a clinical specimen. Therefore, a positive antigen test result is sufficient to determine SARS-CoV-2 virus infection.
