The different lesions
Several kinds of lesions exist and they have different names. In order to be able to inform the emergency services on the type of injury for a more suitable treatment, it is important to know how to recognize them. |
abrasion
The skin is broken and there is minor blood loss.
Contusion
The skin is blue or purple. This is often the result of a blow to the place where the pain is felt. The common name for “contusion” is “blue”.
incision
It is a shallow cut caused by a sharp object.
perforation
The wound is deep and it is caused by a sharp, pointed object. There may be no bleeding if the object remains in the wound
IMPORTANT : never remove an object that punctures the skin. |
Avulsion
It is a piece of skin that is raised but not completely detached. The bleeding may appear profuse, especially if the avulsion is localized on the extremities of the limbs (fingers and toes).
Laceration
It is a deep incision whose cut is not clean (the edges of the wound are often frayed). The bleeding can be heavy.
Amputation
A limb is completely detached (cut or torn off) from the body. If the limb is still attached to the body, it should be put back in place and bandaged. If the limb is completely severed, the amputated parts must be recovered and wrapped with wet gas and sterile to give them to help.
