A high-protein diet that is dangerous for people with kidney disease

Dietitian Dr. Hanna Stolińska admits that it is difficult to imagine Easter without eggs, mayonnaise, cold cuts, white sausage and cheesecake. However, it must be remembered that such a set in too large amounts is detrimental to health. – Traditional Easter dishes are a real “protein bomb”, very dangerous for people with kidney diseases – warns the nutritionist.

In Poland, almost 4,5 million people struggle with chronic kidney disease. These patients must remember that any deviation from the diet is an additional burden on their body. – Two days of gentle deviations do not have to end badly, but if the patient goes to the element, the consequences can be serious – adds Dr. Hanna Stolińska.

  1. Protein in the diet – its importance and role. Which products do we find the most protein in?

Chronic kidney disease develops in latency for a long time, as it does not cause more serious ailments. So many people are unaware that their kidneys fail. Meanwhile, eating large amounts of high-protein products and small amounts of vegetables and fruits has an acidifying effect on the body. Proteins are broken down into acids, and vegetables and fruit contain alkaline compounds.

A high-protein diet increases the risk of heart failure

Long-term latent acidosis weakens and reduces the body’s efficiency, and increases susceptibility to other diseases such as osteoporosis and rheumatism. Conversely, a diet rich in plant products protects the kidneys and delays the development of chronic kidney failure. This is evidenced by research by specialists from the Texas A&M Healath Science Center College of Medicine in Bryan, Texas (published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology).

Researchers at the University of Eastern Finland in Kuopio warn that a high-protein diet increases the risk of heart failure, especially in middle-aged men. Those who consume animal protein, both in meat and dairy, are most at risk. Only in the case of fish and egg proteins, there was no increased risk of heart failure. Finnish researchers reported this in the journal “Circulation: Heart Failure”.

Not all diets are healthy and safe for our body. It is recommended that you consult your doctor before starting any diet, even if you do not have any health concerns. When choosing a diet, never follow the current fashion. Remember that some diets, incl. poor in particular nutrients or strongly limiting calories, and monodietes can be devastating for the body, carry a risk of eating disorders, and may also increase appetite, contributing to a quick return to the former weight.

Referring to Easter, Dr. Stolińska admits that it is impossible to completely give up tradition. – But I would advise you to put the mayonnaise aside, or to separate some dishes, for example eating eggs for breakfast and then a small portion of meat for dinner. Preferably with porridge. Vegetable salad can be prepared without eggs, and when it comes to cakes, there are really many interesting vegan recipes – says the specialist.

And although it concerns all of us, it is still a taboo subject that we are often ashamed to talk about. What do hormonal changes and natural births change? How not to harm the pelvic floor muscles and how to care for them? How do we talk about perineal problems with our daughters? About this and many other aspects of the problem in a new episode of the podcast.
