The epidemic situation in other countries is worsening due to the expansion of the Delta variant. The expert has no doubts who gets sick the most. “The next waves of coronavirus infections in other countries are clearly taking place among unvaccinated people” – infectious diseases specialist Prof. Miłosz Parczewski.

The fourth wave of coronavirus in Poland? It is stable for now

«I rate the situation in Poland as consistently good, but I am so anxious that it lulls our vigilance. Yet another wave can be seen everywhere around, all over Europe »- told PAP the chief doctor for COVID-19 at the provincial hospital in Szczecin, Prof. Miłosz Parczewski.

He noted that in Spain and Portugal, changes in the epidemiological status have been visible for some time – these are countries where the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has indicated the “highest alert state”, the red category.

“Britain has dropped out of this surveillance system due to Brexit, but it would also be red. We see an increase in infections in Israel, which for us does not translate directly, but it says that even a well-vaccinated society may have problems in the context of a new wave of the virus »- indicated an infectious disease specialist.

He noted that increases in the incidence of infections are also reported by France and Our Country “and that may also await us”.

When asked whether it was possible that the fourth wave of the pandemic would appear in Poland faster than previously predicted, he pointed out that “it is mid-July, epidemiology has turned up to plus or minus a hundred cases and is not falling or growing”.

«The wave is always rushing. The beginning of August will be the fastest, but rather the second half. Of course, it’s hard to forecast. Even if there are a thousand cases a day, it’s not a wave for me yet. We would have to talk about several thousand or ten thousand »- said prof. Parczewski.

Infections in other countries evidently among the unvaccinated

The expert noted that the waves of infection in other countries “evidently run among the unvaccinated”.

“The world will naturally divide into the unvaccinated and vaccinated, that is, those who will be ill and may become seriously ill, versus those who will not be ill and in a small percentage of cases may become slightly ill” – noted the doctor.

He added that all models indicate that the Delta variant infects primarily unvaccinated people, “that is, it searches for these people, although of course the virus does not search, but encounters susceptible people”.

When asked to comment on the number of confirmed cases of infection with the Delta variant, he emphasized that it should be remembered that only a few percent of samples are tested.

«This is an expensive research, technically difficult, and it is also an effort in terms of interpretation. It is not like the molecular test that we are used to, in which we get the result even after 4-6 hours. Not every sample will be sequenced, because there is no such need, ”the doctor noted.

He added that over 150 people who have been confirmed with the Delta variant (the data were presented at the beginning of the week by the MZ spokesman) are just the tip of the iceberg, and there are certainly many more cases of the new variant.

He also noted, when asked about the restrictions on wearing masks, that WHO revised its recommendations, suggesting wearing them indoors, although there was a recent discussion on this topic.

«Dropping masks indoors, where there is a particularly mixed group of people – vaccinated and unvaccinated – is not entirely safe for us. Indeed, at the moment there is little virus circulating in the population, but when there is more of it, the susceptibility will be even higher »- pointed out prof. Parczewski.

He noted that last year’s pandemic situation in the holiday season was similar “and it put our thinking and perception to sleep”.

«Expect epidemiology to increase with high probability in the fall. Let’s be prepared for it »- emphasized the doctor. (PAP)
