As abczdrowie.pl informed, prof. Małgorzata Wierzbicka, head of the Department of Otolaryngology and Laryngological Oncology at the Medical University of Karol Marcinkowski in Poznań, the coronavirus can cause cases of sensorineural hearing loss or tinnitus. There have also been cases of acute otitis media.

COVID-19 shuts down the senses

Earlier studies indicated that the SARS-CoV-2 virus inhabits and multiplies in the epithelium of the nasal cavity, the olfactory furrow and the nasopharynx. Hence, in some patients the symptom was loss of smell or taste. However, in several people who died from COVID-19 in the US, coronavirus was also found in the middle ear during an autopsy. Reports published in “JAMA Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery”, quoted by the portal abczdrowie.pl, say about it. So there is a possibility that the inflammatory reaction caused by the virus not only “turns off” the sense of smell, but also irritates the epithelium of the Eustachian tube. However, the mechanism of such symptoms is not yet fully clear.
