Sarah Gilbert, head of the team that developed the vaccine produced by AstraZeneca, spoke to the Science and Technology Committee of the UK House of Commons on Wednesday.
– We are thinking about second-generation preparations that could replace injections – said Gilbert, prof. vaccinology from the University of Oxford.
– We have flu shots that are given as a nasal spray. This is a solution that could be used in the future to use vaccines against the coronavirus, she told British MPs during an online meeting. Oral vaccination in tablet form could also be considered as a more convenient alternative to the use of needles and syringes, she added.

– Work on this, however, will take some time. New solutions will have to be tested in terms of safety as well as effectiveness. Reaction immune caused by nasal or oral administration of the vaccine will be different from that caused by intramuscular administration Gilbert said.

Prof. Gilbert also warned that easing COVID-19 restrictions too quickly could result in higher viral transmission and increase the risk of new variants with greater resistance to existing vaccines emerging.
