The situation is either getting out of hand or is already out of control. The number of new infections is very high, and official statistics do not reflect the actual scale of the problem – said Dr. med. Monika Bociąga-Jasik, specialist in infectious diseases.
– From my point of view, the situation is either getting out of control at this point. The number of new SARS-CoV-2 infections in our country is very large. More and more patients in hospitals are in a serious and very serious condition, requiring oxygen therapy. Young patients without comorbidities often go to the intensive care unit, told PAP Dr. med. Monika Bociąga-Jasik, who works with COVID-19 patients at the University Hospital in Krakow.

The doctor is convinced that the official figures do not show the actual scale of infections, and the testing system in Poland is no longer inefficient. In some situations, as she described, people cannot get to the swab points, they don’t want to wait in lines for hours to get the test done. Currently, there are three to five days for a test result in many places. She added that many people, despite the symptoms of infection, prefer to stay at home without undergoing tests, fearing that their family members will be quarantined.
– We, the medical staff, are no longer able to effectively and effectively fight the epidemic. In my opinion, the contagious doctor, what we see now is the top of the iceberg – said Dr. Monika Bociąga-Jasik.
In her opinion, over the next two weeks, the number of patients may be much greater. – It has to do with irresponsible decisions that caused people to take to the streets despite the epidemic threat. Such a situation should not happen, it arouses internal opposition in me – explained the doctor.
As she admitted, having heard the first reports of the Wuhan disease, she did not think that there would be a pandemic, she was convinced that “the first, individual cases can be suppressed, and the epidemic will be, as it used to be, more media than real”.
Opinions are multiplying in the public space that in recent years the specialization of infectious diseases has been neglected and infectious wards have been closed.
– There are definitely very few of us in Poland. The infectious disease specialization has been underdeveloped for many years. Units were closing. It was believed that infectious diseases are diseases that do not threaten a modern, well-organized society – admitted the specialist and at the same time emphasized that in his work he meets fantastic people, often enthusiasts, and without young residents, the Department of Infectious Diseases at the University Hospital would not cope with the epidemic.

Dr. Monika Bociąga-Jasik recalled the need to wear masks, social distancing, especially in closed, poorly ventilated rooms. She noted that frequent hand washing is more important than wearing gloves.
