What you need to know about serums?

Serums appeared on the market more than 10 years ago and were created in order to increase the concentration of beneficial substances for the skin. Their composition is rich and saturated, since the input of active components in it is many times greater than in the cream. It is impossible to put such a concentration of components in a cream, because it would destroy its light texture.

The serum’s liquid texture and small particle size make it easier to absorb into the skin. Such products contain special components that have a small molecular size. They, penetrating into the intercellular space, weaken the surface in the stratum corneum and improve the absorption of the cream.

Serum types

Usually serums are on one or mon the basis of, but are selected according to the type of skin or the type of problem that worries.

  • For all skin types. Lightweight, water-based moisturizing serums with hyaluronic acid or herbal extracts are great for summer and all skin types. They will draw water into the skin cells, perfectly moisturizing it.

Advice of the expert: moisturizing serums can be used throughout the year, but if there are no visible problems, then you can use them in courses for additional care.

  • For oily skin water-based liquid serums with a high sebum-regulating effect are also suitable. Look for zinc to reduce inflammation, salicylic acid to tighten pores, or glycolic acid to exfoliate gently.

Advice of the expert: very often, owners of oily skin use serums as a complete product, without the use of a cream. But if the sebum-regulating effect of the product is very strong, it is better to use it together with a moisturizer to avoid overdrying the skin. Also, when using serum as a complete product, choose serum with SPF for UV protection.

  • For aging skin look for serums with an anti-age or lifting effect. These products are recommended for active wrinkle formation. In their composition, you will find hyaluronic and glycolic acids, collagen, algae and other plant components, as well as vitamin C and nicyamide, which lightens pigmentation. For oily water-based serums are suitable for aging skin, for dry – on oil.

Advice of the expert: it is better to take age serums in a course of 1-1,5 months, and then give the skin a break for two months. For daily use, it is sufficient to apply the serum once a day, avoiding the area around the eyes.

  • For dry and sensitive gel, dense, oily serums with plant extracts are suitable for skin.

Advice of the expert: oil serums can clog pores, resulting in inflammation. We recommend using either 1-2 times a week as an independent product, or choosing a cream serum: although it is nutritious, it has a lighter texture. This product is ideal for dry skin.

What else is important to know?

1. If the serum feels enough to moisturize and nourish the skin, it can be used as a stand-alone product.

2.In serum application quite simple: rub 4-5 drops with palms, apply on the face skin and wait 5-10 minutes for the serum to be completely absorbed, after which it will be possible to apply the cream (it will supplement the serum and strengthen the protective barrier).

3. It is best to combine serum and cream from the same line, so the effect will appear faster and will last longer due to the same components.

4. Any serum should ideally be stored in an opaque package in a dark place without exposure to sunlight. Observe the storage instructions on the packaging: some products should be kept in the refrigerator.

5. Serums with vitamin C, nicyamide, glycolic acid are best used in the evening or together with an SPF filter, so as not to increase skin pigmentation.

Top 5 serums from an expert

– I began to look closely at the use of serums at the age of 25. Now I’m 30, and my daily skincare routine includes the use of serums. My skin type is combination, with oily in the T-zone and dry cheeks.

1. Moisturizing serum. I use this serum all year round. Without her, nowhere. In the summer I use it without cream, as a complete product, since my skin is nourished and hydrated. But in winter I combine it with my daily cream.

2. Serum with vitamin C and nitsiamide. On the eve of important events, I use a serum with vitamin C or a whitening effect (nitsiamide in the composition), it gives the skin a beautiful glow, slightly whitens pigmentation and evens out the color.

3. Serums with antibacterial ingredients. For minor inflammations and pimples on the skin, I use a serum with salicylic acid, bactericidal components or sebum-regulating effect; I apply locally to inflammations.

4. Oil serums. I use oil and nutritional serums 1-2 times a week at night. This therapy leaves the skin soft and smooth without the use of a nourishing cream that is heavy enough for my skin type.

5. Revitalizing lifting serum. I also use serums for aging skin 1-2 times a week, with different anti-aging components, a lifting effect and a peptide complex that stimulates the production of its own elastin. As a result, the skin is elastic and the aging process is slowed down.
