Girls from the football cheerleading team, when they perform together, seem more attractive than individually. For the first time such an observation was made on television – it was made by Barney Stinson, the hero of the American sitcom How I Met Your Mother (2005). And now this has been confirmed by research by psychologists*. When we look at a group of people, our brain does not perceive each detail separately, but captures the general rhythm of the picture: heads, eyes, hair. Thanks to this, facial features, surrounded by other faces, are smoothed out, and the face itself seems more proportional. So if you are worried when you see yourself in group photos from recent corporate parties, remember the cheerleader effect!
