The cat’s eyes fester
Eye diseases are common in cats. Street animals are especially susceptible to such ailments. What to do if a cat’s eyes fester? In such cases, delaying a visit to the veterinarian can leave the animal blind. But after identifying the reason, it is also possible to reduce the suffering of the animal on its own.
Why does a cat’s eyes fester?
Discharge from the eye in a cat is normal if the discharge is transparent and does not resemble mucus. The purulent contents of the eye are yellowish-green in color – the cause of the disease, which can be caused by the following phenomena:
· Trauma (wound damage to the eyelids and eyes, bruises);
· Decreased immunity;
· Infectious diseases (conjunctivitis, keratitis, blepharitis, etc.);
· Parasites;
Allergy (discharge is usually transparent and watery);
· Contact of chemicals on the mucous membrane of the eyes;
· The shape of the muzzle in some breeds (Persian cats).
When the eyes are puffed up, the cat shows anxiety and avoids contact. Of particular concern is the condition in which the animal has a fever and lack of appetite.
The cat’s eye festers: what to do?
If such a painful phenomenon does not cause severe discomfort in the animal and does not occur often, there is little cause for concern. In this case, it is worth carrying out the following treatment procedure:
· Rinse the surface of the eyelids with warm boiled water, if the eyes are stuck together;
· Roll sterile cotton wool into a roller;
· Prepare a decoction of chamomile and cool it to room temperature;
· Wet the roller in the infusion and squeeze out two or three drops of liquid on the sore eye;
· Avoid getting dry cotton wool material into the eye: this irritates the inflamed organ.
Treatment must be carried out until the pus is gone. The main thing is that the cotton wool is sterile and not reused, otherwise the inflammatory process will only worsen.
Also used as flushing solution:
Boric acid (2 tablespoons of the product for half a glass of water);
Furacilin (2 tablets per glass of water).
The diagnosis in the clinic is made on the basis of a thorough external examination and laboratory tests. In advanced stages, treatment includes intramuscular antibiotics. In all other cases, topical ointments are indicated.
Prevention of eye diseases means proper nutrition of the animal, vaccinations, deworming and hygiene. If your cat’s eyes fester, be vigilant and don’t let the situation take its course.
