The cat does not eat anything
A cat’s refusal to eat is not always indicative of a disease. The animal can thus show dissatisfaction with a new bowl, unusual food, dirty dishes. If the pet remains vigorous, he has no other manifestations of the disease, then nothing threatens his health. But if you become unusually lethargic, you should be on your guard.
Why doesn’t the cat eat anything?
In cats, appetite disappears during stress, moving to a new place, or prolonged absence of the owner. Often the appetite worsens during pregnancy and disappears completely just before lambing. In summer, pets may refuse to eat due to extreme heat.
What diseases can a lack of appetite indicate:
- infection with worms: the cat begins to run inadequately, crap in the wrong places;
- intestinal obstruction: the pet refuses even water, there is no stool, vomiting appears;
- viral infections: lack of appetite is accompanied by nasal discharge, constant sneezing, tearing;
- hepatic lipidosis – develops in overweight cats;
- kidney disease, which often occurs in animals over 7 years old, is accompanied by vomiting, nitrogenous odor from the mouth appears;
- urolithiasis – urination is weak or absent, blood impurities appear in the urine;
- poisoning with poison – blood impurities are present in the vomit and feces, the body temperature rises, shortness of breath, convulsions appear.
Cats sometimes purposefully arrange a fasting day to give their digestive system a chance to rest.
What to do if your cat is not eating
Even with obvious signs of poisoning, you should not do an enema to the animal on your own, give laxatives. It is necessary to take the cat to the veterinary clinic for qualified assistance.
What to do if your cat refuses to eat:
- wash the bowl, return the dishes to their original place if they were rearranged;
- if the pet rejects food, but does not refuse a favorite treat, it is necessary to revise the animal’s diet, purchase another food, slightly reduce the portions;
- no need to try to feed or water the cat forcibly;
- in the off-season, you can offer the animal sprouted grass, vitamins during a hunger strike;
- in case of obstruction, it is especially dangerous to give any drugs on your own so as not to lubricate the symptoms;
- timely prophylaxis of worms.
Self-medication is dangerous for cats: many diseases proceed rapidly, can become chronic or cause the death of the animal.
If the pet is active, looks healthy, then the reluctance to eat goes away within two days. Otherwise, a lack of appetite is an alarming sign, it is necessary to show the cat to the veterinarian.
