After traveling more than 1609 km, two groups of ambulances from Great Britain reached Poland and were directed to help victims of the war in Ukraine and refugees fleeing the invasion. According to the reports of the “Mirror” daily, on Saturday, March 12, they arrived in the border village of Korczowa in south-eastern Poland from Great Britain three ambulanceswhich will ultimately strengthen the Ukrainian health service. One of them will be directed to the neonatal ward of a hospital in Kiev, and two will be used in military hospitals.

The ambulances in question were previously part of the NHS (National Heath Service — Public Health Service in Great Britain) and then they ‘retired’.
Two colleagues, 47-year-old Mark Strong and 56-year-old John Fuges, while observing the news about the war in Ukraine, came up with an unusual idea and organized a fundraiser for the purchase of ambulance-retired people. For collected 30 thousand. They managed to buy three vans (around 167 thousand PLN), which they used to reach Poland over the weekend.

While ambulances are not the newest equipment of this type, they still contain valuable items such as beds and storage cabinets that are fully functional. The ambulances that reached Korczowa were also loaded with medical aid, which was funded by their producers and private persons.
Mark Strong is and has been living in Great Britain for over 20 years. Images from the war in Ukraine shocked him, especially since, as he revealed in an interview with the Mirror, his wife is Ukrainian, and their family and mutual friends live in Kiev. The man, after an interview with John Fuges, whose daughter attends the same school as his only child, said that you cannot fall into apathy, but that real measures should be taken to help the inhabitants of Ukraine. The duo has started a fundraiser to purchase as many former NHS ambulances as possible and deliver them to Ukraine.

The three ambulances that arrived in Korczowa on March 12 are not the first to be purchased thanks to the collection of Fuges and Strong. Earlier, three other vehicles of this type were transported to our country. As Mark Strong said, vehicles of this type are surprisingly easy to get, and their price is between 5 and 15 thousand. pounds, i.e. nearly 28 thousand. and 83,5 thous. PLN per item.
Ultimately, Fuges and Strong want to buy 30 ambulances. The group they set up works with pharmaceutical companies and hospitals across the UK to source equipment for doctors in the field. Packages with baby food or walking sticks are donated by private people who live near their homes in Wimbledon in the south of London.

A separate convoy of three NHS ambulances from London also arrived in Poland on March 12. Ambulances, which arrived in Lublin late Saturday afternoon, after a 48-hour journey, brought dozens of military first aid kits and about 200 defibrillatorswhich will ultimately be distributed to civilians in Mikołajewo in southern Ukraine. The remaining surgical supplies delivered by ambulances will be transferred to refugee centers established at the Polish-Ukrainian border.

Two doctors from Ukraine are helping to organize the mission — Dennis Ougrin and Roman Cregg who work in British hospitals and belong to the Ukrainian Medical Society in Great Britain. The medics had previously driven private cars to Przemyśl and brought first aid kits and an ultrasound device that helps detect internal body injuries caused by debris. Dennis Ougrin, a child psychiatrist at Queen Mary’s Hospital in London, thanked the British and the NHS for the support they are showing to the Ukrainians.
According to “Mirror” reports, Great Britain sent six planes to Ukraine, incl. with medical equipment. The British Ministry of Health and Human Services said that a total of 650 were on board the planes. items including dressings, needles and syringes, infusion pumps, and protective equipment.
In the meantime, the United Kingdom sent six more aircraft with medical aid and equipment to Ukraine, after many shellings of medical facilities.
