«In March, the house of 31-year-old Olena Selichianova was hit by a missile. She and her five-year-old twins Nazar and Timur were injured and were completely blind. They were injured so badly that they were sent to Poland for treatment » — Anton Heraszczenko from the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs wrote on social media.
The dramatic event occurred in early March, when a bomb hit the house of Olena Selichianova. In an interview with the BBC she mentions that she fell to her knees dragging two of her five-year-old twin sons — Nazar and Timur. She wanted to protect the boys from shards of glass. He doesn’t remember any more.
All three were blinded. Glass shards stabbed their eyes, arms and other parts of their body, and their skin was burned. Additionally, Olena broke her leg. He doesn’t even know who pulled the family out of the rubble. Their condition was so serious that they were taken to a hospital in Lviv. One of the doctors working there contacted her lecturer — prof. Robert Rejdak from Lublin. This is how they came to Poland.

Olena, when she arrived in the Lublin region, was completely blind, and the children were extremely exhausted — they alternately ate, slept and cried. A 31-year-old woman underwent surgery to correct bilateral cataracts. The procedure was very complicated because the eyes were wounded and one of them still had scraps of glass. The operation was successful and the mother of two regained her sight.
Cataract surgery — what is it about?
A cataract is a disease caused by the clouding of the lens in the eye. Cataract surgery consists in removing the natural “broken” lens and replacing it with an artificial one.
Cataracts have various causes. The most common variation is the senile one, the cause of which has not yet been established. This disease may also appear as a result of, inter alia, injuries or taking certain medications, e.g. corticosteroids.
“Two days delay and they wouldn’t regain their sight”
It will take longer for the twins to recover. Nazar lost an eye. It will be replaced with a prosthesis. They both require longer and more complicated treatment. The team of prof. Rejdaka performed an operation on their retina and is now planning cataract surgery. In their case, time plays a major role. According to the medic, if the boys were in his hands two days later, they might never regain their eyesight.
«Fortunately, the prognosis for the other eye is optimistic. Olena’s eyesight was completely regained. Nazar and Timur will require additional treatments » — commented in an interview with Gazeta Wyborcza, prof. Rejdak.
