Ordinary paste (most often called hygienic or treatment-and-prophylactic), which most people use daily, removes only soft plaque. To clean the colored plaque that appears after prolonged use of coloring drinks (coffee, black tea, red wine), as well as the plaque of a smoker, it is necessary to brush your teeth with whitening pastes.
It is worth pointing out that whitening paste brightens the enamel only by a couple of tones and cannot be used regularly to maintain tooth sensitivity.

How to choose a whitening toothpaste
All pastes that remove pigment plaque and are considered whitening are divided into two types:
- With an increased concentration of abrasive elements – clarification occurs due to mechanical cleansing of contaminants on the surface of the teeth.
- With the content of derivatives of hydrogen peroxide – there is a chemical clarification of tooth tissues.
The main feature of abrasive whitening toothpastes is the high content of abrasive polishing components. The more of them are, the better it will clean the enamel. The abrasive rating is the RDA index and is often listed on the packaging. Pastes up to 80 units are common hygienic ones that are suitable for everyday use.
With an RDA coefficient above 80, all pastes are whitening and require their correct application:
- 100 units – 2 times a day, not exceeding 2-3 months;
- 120 units – 2 times a day, not exceeding 2 months and then a mandatory pause of 1,5-2 months;
- 150 units – 2-3 times a week for 1 month, then a break of 1,5-2 months;
- 200 units – 2 times a week until the desired result, then 1 time per week to maintain the effect.
Some manufacturers do not list the abrasion factor, so you can’t say for sure how safe they are.
It is important to note that not all shades of teeth can whiten well to the desired result. Only having a yellow tint, you can achieve visible lightening by a couple of tones. If the color of the teeth is gray or brown, then whitening at the dentist will be an effective method.
To achieve the best result, it is recommended to alternate the pastes: first use pastes with a high content of abrasive substances, and then with carbamide peroxide.

What should not be in a safe whitening toothpaste?
• antimicrobial substances (chlorhexidine, antibacterial drugs) – destroy their own oral microflora, which leads to local dysbacteriosis;
