The best varieties of sea buckthorn
Sea buckthorn has many varieties, and often they differ greatly from each other. And it is very important to choose the right one so that later disappointment does not overtake.

Varieties of sea buckthorn have different origins, and it greatly depends on which region it is best to grow them. And they also differ significantly in yield, they come with and without thorns, there are absolutely resistant to diseases and pests, while others are severely affected by them. In addition, they differ in taste and vitamin content.

Bushes can vary significantly in height. There are tall ones that reach 3 – 4 m (1) and take up a lot of space in the garden, and there are compact ones – no higher than 1,5 – 2 m.

In addition, it is worth remembering that sea buckthorn is a dioecious plant. Only female specimens are harvested (2). But in the garden (or at least the neighbors) there must be at least 1 male specimen, otherwise the females will not produce a crop.

Therefore, be sure to check out our rating to make the right choice.

Rating of the top 25 best varieties of sea buckthorn according to KP

The most vitamin varieties

It is generally accepted that lemons contain a lot of vitamin C. But it’s not. Most of all ascorbic acid is found in the fruits of the Barbados cherry – there it is from 1000 to 3300 mg! In second place is rose hips – 650 mg. On the third – red bell pepper – 250 mg. Sea buckthorn shares fourth place with black currants – their berries contain 200 mg of vitamin C. How to choose a variety of sea buckthorn

It is important to pay attention to the origin of the variety. Many of them are just selected natural samples. And they come from populations that grew up in completely different climatic zones and are adapted specifically to local conditions.

For example, Altai varieties have adapted to Siberian frosts. They can easily withstand temperatures down to -40 °C and even down to -45 °C. But, say, near St. Petersburg, where severe cooling can be replaced by thaws in winter, they are likely to die. But the varieties created near Kaliningrad, where the climate is mild, will certainly freeze in a sharply continental climate.

Therefore, you need to choose varieties that are bred in regions with similar weather conditions. But it is even easier to look into the State Register of Breeding Achievements and see for which regions it is recommended.

Popular questions and answers

We talked about the choice of sea buckthorn with agronomist-breeder Svetlana Mikhailova.

What to look for when choosing a variety of sea buckthorn?

For sea buckthorn, it is important where it is zoned – buy only those varieties that are recommended for your region. In addition, a good variety should have 3 important features:

– high productivity;

– shoots without thorns or with a minimum number of them;

– large and sweet berries.

How to choose a sea buckthorn seedling?

It is best to buy seedlings grown from cuttings. They are usually small. Saplings from overgrowth are not the best option, male plants often give abundant undergrowth, and it’s not a fact that such a specimen will not be palmed off on you, passing it off as a female.

How to distinguish a male sea buckthorn plant from a female?

They are well distinguished by kidneys (spring and autumn). In male plants, the buds are large, rounded, with 5-7 scales. In women – small, elongated, with 2 scales. The leaves are also different: in male plants they are usually gray, and in female plants they are greenish.
