The best creative stylist in France, Marisol Suarez, knows how to make everything out of hair: sophisticated avant-garde hairstyles, wigs and even jewelry in the form of earrings and bracelets. She recently visited Moscow, held master classes, and at the same time told how she achieved success, what inspires her and what hairstyles are in fashion now.
Marisol Suarez began her professional career in 1990, becoming the best hair stylist in the Biguine network of salons. She worked with two of the world’s best stylists, Alain Pichon and Peter Gray, received the international award for Best Creative Stylist, became the art director of the TONI & GUY salon, opened her own studio in Paris Studio Marisol in 2005 and finally founded her own company for the production of hair accessories and jewelry (La Manufactura).
Is this your first experience with Russian students?
This is generally my first meeting with Russia, with Russian hairdressers, and yes, these are my first students here in Russia. It was very interesting for me to work with them.
What did you try to convey to your students?
I do a lot just for fun, easy and fun. I tried to convey this to them. We are creative people and cannot cut our hair this way or that way all the time. You need to be in constant search, work with different textures and materials. I always try to look wider and turn ordinary things upside down. For example, my next project I’m planning will have no models at all. There will be hair, yes, but there will be no models.
However, there can be many projects, but the task is one – to discover a new source of creativity in oneself. After that, it becomes easier to work at fashion shows with great fashion designers and designers, because being around them is ordinary, it is simply not acceptable.
How did you manage to learn to be so free in creativity?
A big part was my work at Tony and Guy, where I was the art director for ten years. At first I lack courage, I wanted to play and began to look for forms and new directions and, perhaps, myself, without realizing this, reached such an extreme point.
But what about creative crises?
There are crises. I often feel a lot of pressure, but at such moments I try to think more about my own creativity. Here I allow myself a lot and is practically not limited by anything.
Where do you find inspiration?
From various sources. For example, I watch films of the era that inspires me at the moment, and every time I see amazing things. These are images captured on film, interiors, music. Also, I take notes. I can wake up in the middle of the night and write something down or sketch something. My boyfriend is not happy with my muses at night, but what can I do. I remember some details, it occurs to me to look at something else. Until a certain time, I have no idea what it will be, and I walk as if with my eyes closed, but sooner or later I come to the result.
Describe fashionable looks in general trends for the next year?
For girls, I would recommend short hairstyles, “like a boy”, for those who can afford it. Crisp contours and specific colors are relevant. That is, if we are talking about a red color, then it should be on the verge of red.
It is important to remember that there are many trends each season. They are based on the artist’s desire not to reproduce this or that era, but to be inspired by it. So, for example, hairstyles with thick hair and voluminous shape, which were popular in the 50s and 60s, are equally relevant. You can watch the movie “Cry-baby” with Johnny Depp.
Various afro hairstyles have returned, repeating and duplicating black culture, which has become relevant in a new way. Yes, and, one must say, about the Grace Jones era with its quite versatile hairstyles. This is the end of the 80s, when an aggressive image was in vogue.
What should people do who do not want to radically change their image? Are there any simple rules from Marisol Suarez?
Yes, I can advise. Many girls have in their arsenal a huge number of bottles and various means that they never use and sometimes do not even know why they are. And you need to have only three things: shampoo, care, which should not contain any silicone, and one good styling product.
What are your impressions of Moscow, would you like to come back here again?
Oh yeah! I would really like to get to know this amazing and diverse city, which reminds me of Paris in its eclecticism and mixing of cultures. The only rule is I won’t bring my boyfriend here. Because in Russia there are beautiful girls at every step. Of course, I saw Russians in Paris, but it seemed to me that this was an exception, but when I arrived here, I realized that I was wrong. I will come back here maybe next year. In general, I love it when everything happens spontaneously.
