The best outboard motors in 2022

Contents

A boat with a motor is the dream of every fisherman. And its acquisition is an important stage in life. Distant shores, islands and lakes immediately become available. The range of engines is wide enough to choose the best and most suitable for your needs right away. Therefore, the editorial board of the KP considered various options and presents its study to the judgment of readers.

Fishing as a hobby needs a simple, reliable and economical unit. It fits in the trunk of a car and requires little maintenance. Motor below 10 HP does not need registration and the presence of the rights of the navigator.

The correct choice of motor is determined by the parameters of the boat: its length, weight, bottom type, transom height. It is also important on which reservoir it is planned to fish or just travel, the number of people in the boat, the desired speed. The maximum power of the motor is always indicated on the company nameplate, a plate attached to the transom. Do not use a motor with more power than recommended by the manufacturer. The boat will steer poorly and flood with water.

Mikatsu M9.9FHS

The Mikatsu M9.9FHS outboard two-stroke outboard motor is one of the most popular engines in the tourist water motors market. The reasons for the popularity are obvious: first of all, the price of the engine is favorable in comparison with analogues, and the unit itself is undemanding to the quality of consumables (high-alloy steel will protect the engine, even if it runs on poor fuel).

The motor consumes 5 liters of fuel per hour and has a fuel tank of 24 liters. A three-speed transmission with forward, reverse and neutral modes provides agile and economical travel. Finally, the manufacturer gives an extended 10-year warranty.

The motor deadwood is designed for a transom height of 381 mm, there is also a modification of the motor for a transom height of 508 mm. The design of the mounts, which has 6 angles of inclination, allows you to safely overcome shallow water.

Instant start of the engine is guaranteed by the “high-tech digital ignition system” (CDI), there is a check for emergency shutdown of the engine. A GPS tracker is integrated into the design: this is a useful feature when the unit is drowned, stolen, and during the work of search and rescue services.

How to choose a boat motor

The right choice of a motor for a boat is determined, first of all, by the technical parameters of the boat. That is, the type of boat, its length and width, the type of bottom and the size of the balloon of the inflatable boat, the presence of a transom and keel. The boat’s passport must indicate the maximum engine power.

It is also important to understand where and in what conditions the outboard motor will be operated. Fishing at sea is different from fishing on a river or lake. Fishing alone does not require as much power as going out with a company or family.

Alexander Orishev, author of the special course “Fundamentals of fishing tourism” in the Timiryazev Academy and books on tourism, told the CP about the intricacies of choosing a motor for a boat and answered popular questions.

When choosing a motor for a boat, you need to focus on two parameters: power and price. If you are going to fish alone, then the so-called “egoist kit” will do – motor up to 8 horsepower (hereinafter – hp), which allows one fisherman to move on a glider. For those who do not care about speed, but just need to move from point A to point B, then you should choose motor in 2-3 hp. On such a motor, the maximum speed is 5-10 km. in hour. The price of these motors is from 35 to 90 thousand rubles.

If you are fishing together, you will need motors in 8-9,8 hp. They allow two fishermen in a boat to go on a glider. With one fisherman, the speed of such a boat is up to 35 km per hour. The price of these motors is from 65 to 115 thousand rubles.

Motors of a separate group – 9,9 hp At first glance, it is not clear why, with a slight nominal increase in power, the price of these motors increases sharply. The reason is legislation, which allows the use of motors up to 10,88 hp without obtaining rights. Meanwhile, motors 9,9 hp are “strangled” versions of 15-20-horsepower engines. And craftsmen, using some manipulations, easily return them to their original power. Hence the price of these motors. With one fisherman, the speed of the motors of a separate group is up to 50 km per hour. Their price is from 90 to 250 thousand rubles.

The next category of motors – from 15 hp. They are used in commercial fishing, when fishermen pay taxes, pass driving tests, get their licenses, etc. On a boat with such a motor, state numbers are installed. The price of these motors is from 105 thousand rubles to several million rubles.

The price of the motor is also directly proportional to the quality for which the manufacturer is responsible. Chinese motors of the same power are cheaper than Japanese ones. A two-horsepower Japanese Honda costs the same as a five-horsepower outboard motor from a well-known Chinese manufacturer. As a result, there is a whole caste of fishermen who purchase exclusively Japanese motors, considering Chinese ones unsuitable for long-term operation. The second group of anglers is convinced that it is not worth overpaying for a Japanese brand, including Suzuki, Yamaha, Tohatsu and the previously mentioned Honda. Note that in recent years, Japanese firms have placed their production in other countries: Malaysia, China, Thailand. However, the Japanese do not hide this fact.

Among the supporters of Chinese motors, there are two groups of consumers. The former are convinced that it is better to purchase the so-called Chinese brands, which are covered by a manufacturer’s warranty. The fact is that they are assembled on lines purchased by the Chinese abroad and are produced at a higher technological level. Examples of such manufacturers: Parsun, Hidea.

The second group of consumers prefers Chinese motors, for which no warranty is provided. They are 1,5 times cheaper than the previous ones, often have flaws in the assembly. However, in the event of a breakdown, the s more or less successfully repair them in their garages. There are no problems with spare parts: they are easy to purchase on popular Chinese sites.

Popular questions and answers

How to determine the required power and tact of the motor?
As already mentioned, fishing alone requires motors with a power of up to 8 hp, and if there are two fishermen, then power from 8 hp. and higher. Modern motors, in addition to power, are also classified by cycle: two-stroke and four-stroke.

Lubrication of two-stroke motors is carried out using a working mixture i.e. oil is directly added to gasoline and poured into the fuel tank. Accordingly, these motors have more smoke and more detonation and noise. They work worse at low speeds, they form carbon deposits on candles. Unburned oil is thrown directly into the reservoir. Therefore, in some European countries, two-stroke engines are prohibited.

Four-stroke engines are more economical, quieter and more environmentally friendly. They are resistant to low speeds and are well suited to such types of fishing as trolling. However, their disadvantage is their weight. They are heavier than two strokes. If one person can still carry a 5-6-horsepower four-stroke engine, then a fisherman alone cannot lift a more powerful engine. The second disadvantage of four-stroke motors is the complexity of the design. At home, fixing them is much more difficult.

What kind of oil should be used for outboard motors?
The oil must comply with the environmental class and match the cycle of the motor. If the motor is two-stroke, then you need to choose a special certified oil, which, if it enters the reservoir, does not harm it. And it is best to use the oil recommended by the manufacturer.
How to break in a boat motor?
Run-in is carried out according to the manufacturer’s recommendation. As a rule, it is 10 hours. The first two hours are carried out at low speeds, the next three hours – at medium speeds. It is possible to increase to maximum speed, but not more than 2-3 minutes, and on some models up to 30 seconds.
Is it possible to install a boat motor with your own hands?
99% of motor users in Our Country install them with their own hands. Installing a motor on a boat for a fisherman is an everyday necessity for a typical fisherman. If the motor is four-stroke and more than 8 hp, then it is better to install it together. The exception is professional motors that are installed on boats.
