The officer is heading to the Land of the Rising Sun and does not yet suspect that he will find something more than just a job there.
9. Nuremberg Trials | 1961
The ninth place in the list of the best historical films according to “Kinopoisk” is listed for the military drama “The Nuremberg Trials” (1961). The three-hour black-and-white film is based on real events that relate to the small Nuremberg trials of Nazi criminals. German lawyer Ernst Janing becomes the main defendant. His case is led by a well-known American judge named Den Heywood, who will have to defend the honor and life of this respected man.
8. The king speaks! | 2010
The eighth line in the list of the best historical feature films “Kinopoisk” was given to the biographical drama “The king speaks!(2010). This is a story about the British Duke George, who will soon take the throne of the king. Since childhood, George VI suffered from a stutter and was afraid of mass demonstrations. His new position obliges him to be worthy of standing in front of the public and to have a clear diction. The best specialists in Britain struggled with the lack of a duke, but all to no avail. Georg decides to seek help from speech therapist Lionel Logue, who does not have the appropriate education, but according to rumors, he works wonders. In 2011, the film won 4 Oscar statuettes and was recognized as one of the best films.
7. Andrey Rublev | 1966
“Andrei Rublev”(1966) is ranked seventh in the list of the best historical films according to the results of the Kinopoisk vote. The biographical picture, dedicated to one of the great Russian icon painters, is divided into 8 short stories, little connected with each other. But all together they recreate one general picture of medieval Rus’ through the eyes of a monk-artist. The goal of the filmmakers was, first of all, to convey and show the inner spiritual world of Rublev. It was originally planned that the film would be called “Passion for Andrei.” At the Cannes Film Festival, the film was awarded the FIPRESCI Prize.

Its main character is the outstanding figure of India, Mahatma Gandhi, who fought for the rights of his native country to the last. He was born in 1869, when India was still considered part of the British Empire. In 1948, the year of his assassination, the country was declared independent. It was thanks to Gandhi that India was able to become a free country. The film won the Oscar for Best Picture.

The fifth line in the Kinopoisk list went to the Soviet historical film “They fought for their country(1975). The film is based on real events that took place during the Great Patriotic War. The film describes the battle of 1942 near Stalingrad. The whole horror of the war and the numerous losses suffered by the Soviet army are described in all subtleties in the military drama. In 1975, the picture participated in the Palme d’Or nomination.

“Amadeus” (1984) is ranked fourth in the list of the best historical films according to the Kinopoisk website. The feature film was based on the play of the same name by Peter Schaeffer. In the center of the plot is the life story of the composer Antonio Salieri. He was not born with the divine gift of a musician, but firmly believed that with perseverance, patience and commitment to his work, he could achieve enchanting heights. The meeting with Mozart puts the musician into a depressed state. Without making great efforts, music is given to Mozart with the same ease with which he breathes. Envy settles in the composer’s soul, and he decides to get rid of the musical genius and his rival at all costs. In 1985, the picture received an Oscar statuette, winning the Best Picture nomination, and was awarded seven more American Academy Awards.

“Braveheart” (1995) opens the top three best historical films according to Kinopoisk. The picture describes the events that took place in 1280 in Scotland. The country is occupied by the British, and King Edward the Long-legged forbids the Scots to use weapons. The king’s troops are constantly carrying out robbery in local villages, attacking local residents, raping and killing them. The relatives of the protagonist William Wallace die in one of the marauder raids. His uncle Argyle takes him to be raised. Many years pass and the grown-up young man returns to his native land. There he meets his childhood friend Marron, whom he marries. But soon the British kill the wife. Heartbroken and determined, William gathers an army of locals to start an uprising against the English government.

Out of 12 Oscar nominations, the feature film managed to win 7 prestigious statuettes of the American Film Academy. The film describes the events that took place during the Second World War, when the Jews were persecuted from everywhere. The owner of the factory, Oskar Schindler, having learned about the liquidation of the Jews, decides to save his workers from inevitable death. Risking his reputation and position, the man manages to save more than a thousand Jewish lives.
