How to choose a hair balm
Due to keratin and a complex of proteins (for example, wheat germ), all balms have one property – to even out the surface of the hair, to “glue” the scales. Further, the effect of different products is different.
Experts distinguish 4 types of hair balms:
Any hair balm is essentially an acid to neutralize alkaline shampoo. Therefore, the composition may contain many “frightening” substances, but this does not mean that they are harmful. These include:
Dimethicol – provides ease of combing, makes hair soft and manageable;
panthenol – strengthens the cuticle and hair follicle, heals after exposure to an aggressive environment (sun rays, hot air from a hair dryer, intense coloring);
Glycerol derivatives (stearate, etc.) – needed to maintain the creamy structure of the balm, it does not exfoliate over time;
Cetearyl alcohol — as a thickener;
Cetremonium chloride – an excellent antiseptic, prevents the electrification of hair.
In addition to substances of chemical origin, natural components are needed. Nutrition and a healthy look of your hair directly depend on them. Therefore, it is good if the composition contains herbal extracts, oils, vitamins A and E.
Expert Opinion
It would seem that balms are more about care than serious treatment of the scalp. However, this tool greatly affects the appearance and health of your hair – especially with frequent use. Therefore, we turned to professional cosmetologist, doctor of the Laviani clinic Kristina Tulaevaand asked to comment on this topic.
How often do you recommend using hair balm?
Hair balm in summer and winter should be different in composition?
But most often, in winter – balms with a nourishing effect, protecting the hair shaft from freezing; in summer – balms with a moisturizing effect from overdrying and weathering.
Do I need to change hair balms, or give preference to one brand? There is an opinion that “hair gets used to” and reacts strongly to a change in care. Do you agree with this?
With prolonged use of one brand, the scalp “adjusts” to secrete as much sebum as is removed, the hair shafts accumulate the amount of components that they are “used to”.
Without discomfort, you can change balms within the same manufacturer (if you want to change, but it’s scary). The product is applied only to the hair shafts, the scalp will not be affected. But there is such a moment – the result is not visible. It is worth being patient, the condition of the hair should be evaluated for 7-10 times of shampooing due to the overall cumulative effect. Although, if it contains silicones, then you will see the result immediately.
