This is an excellent choice for those who prefer convenience and at the same time do not want to overpay. But the taste of such coffee is slightly worse: the aroma and saturation fade a couple of days after purchase, even if the product is in a vacuum package.

Rating of the top 10 brands of the best ground coffee according to KP

1. Davidoff

This coffee really has a lot of fans: reviews often write about the rich aftertaste and lack of bitterness. There is no husk in the ground grains, and the packaging keeps the product fresh for a couple of weeks. Roskontrol gave this coffee the first place in the ground coffee ranking for 2022.

Not all types can be found in stores, the most common is Davidoff Oriental Style from 100% Arabica, and the most sophisticated is Explorer’s Choice from premium Arabica beans from East Africa, Central and South America.

Preferred Brewing Method: Turk

Advantages and disadvantages

Moderate and pleasant taste, grain of good quality without husk, light acidity, many flavors, vacuum packaging retains good taste
Hard to find in stores, only order online

2. Bushido

It contains 100% Arabica and a wide range of flavors. Specialists in the coffee industry distinguish it from others for its unusual taste, which, however, not everyone will like. The point is the versatility of taste, and its complexity.

Although the name and appearance of the packaging takes us to Japan, coffee is made in the Netherlands. On sale you can find Bushido Red Katana with hints of peach and fruity berries that give a pleasant sourness, Bushido Black Katana with a chocolate aftertaste and Bushido Sensei – a more delicate version with a creamy tinge on the palate. Another plus that distinguishes coffee from others is the ratio of price and quality. All types of coffee have sealed packages: they are dense, with a good valve.

Preferred Brewing Method: Turk

Advantages and disadvantages

Soft, pleasant taste, fine grinding, easy to brew, no bitterness, the price corresponds to the quality, tight packaging to preserve the taste.
Non-standard pack format, Black Katana gives many sourness, which not everyone likes

3. Pauling

The Finnish brand offers more than six varieties of ground coffee to choose from: among them are Arabica, Classic, Arabica Dark, Espresso, Mokka and others. They differ in the degree of roasting of grain, saturation and taste. For those who like a more delicate taste, Mokka is ideal, fans of astringent taste with nutty notes in the body will like Classic. Pauling has a lot to choose from, don’t stop at one. In addition, the price of the brand is even more budgetary than Bushido. Perhaps that is why in almost all reviews for value for money there is a solid five.

Preferred Brewing Method: pusher, coffee machine

Advantages and disadvantages

Different types of roasting, often sold on sale, foam is formed during brewing, and the coffee itself is thick and rich, there are no impurities in the composition
Retail stores sell 2-3 flavors from the entire line, the rest must be searched online

4. Lavazza

Lavazza has been operating for over 100 years and has concerns all over the world: they make both grain and ground coffee. All products combine two or more varieties of Arabica and Robusta. Among ground coffees, Espresso Classico and Crema e Gusto stand out. The second option has a richer taste and spicy notes in the aftertaste, the first is a classic tart espresso. The reviews note that Lavazza, out of habit, can be slightly bitter, you need to get used to it. And it’s better to start doing this with ground Crema e Gusto.

Preferred Brewing Method: filter, turkish

Advantages and disadvantages

Easy to find in stores, quality grain and classic Italian roast, no husks or impurities
The line of grain coffee is larger than ground coffee, reviews complain that a couple of years ago coffee from the company was better, fakes are sold (bad packaging, only half of the goods inside)

5. Selfish

Reviews of this coffee do not give a complete impression of the product: either it is too tart, or bitter, or there is a lot of coffee husks in the package, for some it seemed dry and empty. They don’t argue about tastes, but even those who contributed so many factors to the minuses noted: among other options, Egoiste is even good, deserves a solid 4 out of 5. It complies with GOST (1), has no impurities.

Coffee is produced in Germany and Switzerland from lowland Arabica beans. On our shelves, two options are most often found: Egoiste Noir and Egoiste Velvet. For lovers of tartness, Noir is more suitable, while those who like a slight hint of chocolate and creamy taste can try Velvet. Roskontrol in its rating put it in 4th place.

Preferred Brewing Method: Turkish, in a cup

Advantages and disadvantages

Rich taste, strong, fragrant, easy to find in stores, no impurities
The price can be too high in offline stores, poor choice among flavors

6 Starbucks

Starbucks coffee lovers will be disappointed when they buy a pack of ground coffee at the supermarket. After all, it will taste different from a drink in a coffee shop: more bitterness, stronger roasting of grains and astringency of the drink. Among the four flavors, Starbucks Caffe Verona, with a balanced bitterness and sweetness, and Starbucks Single-Origin Colombia, which has a nutty aftertaste, are the most advantageous. You can find other interesting options in the coffee shops of the network, but you will not find them so often in stores. The easiest way to order coffee is online.

Preferred Brewing Method: coffee machine

Advantages and disadvantages

Full-bodied taste, well revealed in combination with milk, no impurities and husks
There are different grains in coffee shops and shops, ground coffee has a sharp taste

7. Garden

Not only a variety of tastes, but also a pleasant price attract customers to the Jardin brand. Grains are supplied from Colombia, Ecuador and Guatemala, and the product is made in Switzerland. On each pack, the manufacturer indicates the level of strength, which is measured on a five-point scale. In addition, among Jardin coffees there are blends of Arabica and monosort. We recommend trying Jardin Ethiopia Euphoria with the sweetness of peach and sourness of apple, as well as Jardin Bravo Brazilia with caramel aftertaste, dense creamy texture. You can buy them in stores or to order, and brew both in a Turk, and in a coffee machine and a French press.

Preferred Brewing Method: french press, turk

Advantages and disadvantages

Good combination of price / quality, a wide selection of flavors, full information on the package, several brewing methods

Since 1991, Woseba has been producing grain, ground and instant coffee: raw materials are brought from Asia and South America. The official website offers more than five flavor options, and 2-3 are found in stores. Those who love blends should like Woseba Crema Gold: it contains grains from Africa, America, and Asia. And this taste is ideally combined with milk, even vegetable. A more classic version of 100% Arabica is Espresso. It is slightly bitter, has low acidity and gradually reveals the taste.

Preferred Brewing Method: drip coffee maker, coffee machine

Advantages and disadvantages

Bright and aroma-preserving packs, balanced flavor, moderate roast, ideal for drip coffee makers
On marketplaces, the price is often too high, there is no foam when cooking

9. Paretto

Paretto has a small selection: there are three flavors on the Internet, in the store you can often find only one. Paretto Celesto is difficult for beginners: it has a tart mixture of sweet notes, a smoky base, chocolate and dried fruit. A fairly strong drink that should not be diluted with milk in order to experience the full range of taste. A slightly simpler option is Paretto Divino from South American beans combined with Indonesian Arabica beans. Despite the mixture, the taste is full-bodied, not crushed: rich dark chocolate in the base.

This coffee is only so low because it is rarely found in stores. And most often it costs twice as much as, for example, Lavazza or Bushido. Although this is logical, because it belongs to Specialty Coffee. Packs retain aroma and taste well, grinding is more close to medium than to fine.

Preferred Brewing Method: cezve, french press

Advantages and disadvantages

Value for money, minimalist package design, good sealing
Poor “friends” with the Turks, sold in stores above the middle segment

 10. Beloved

coffee brand, which quickly entered the top premium coffee products in the country. Among the ground coffee there are single varieties from Mexico, Indonesia, Ethiopia and other countries, as well as interesting blends from Arabica. For lovers of flavored types, there is coffee with strawberry, chocolate, cinnamon flavors – there are more than 15 of them in total. The most popular among ground coffees is Arabica. It can most often be found in the store, and it is the most familiar to taste for lovers of the classics. Of the obvious advantages – fine grinding without husks.

We advise you to try ground Baileys for those who are delighted with the taste of Irish liqueur. And Santo Domingo from Arabica berries grown on the plantations of the Dominican Republic. It has a lot of interesting notes – vanilla, chocolate, citrus and spices.

Preferred Brewing Method: in a circle, Turkish

Advantages and disadvantages

Full information on the package, interesting design, cooking method indicated, bright taste, several cooking methods, fine and high-quality grinding
It is easy to get confused by the variety of flavors and it is difficult to make a choice, flavored options have an unsaturated smell and taste.

The main criteria for choosing ground coffee

  • Composition of the product. It directly affects the taste. If the blend combines Arabica and Robusta, the drink turns out to be rich, tart, bitter. 100% Arabica is a complex multifaceted flavor bouquet with a pleasant acidity.
  • Roast degree. The darker the bean is roasted, the richer the flavor will be. Conversely, light roasts are responsible for softness and acidity on the palate.
  • Grinding degree. Depends on the brewing method you are using. Brew coffee in a Turk – choose the finest grind (almost dust), for an espresso machine, grind a little larger (but also fine), for the drip method, it is best to take a coarse grind.
  • Packaging ground coffee must be evacuated, with a special valve. The valve allows the release of carbon dioxide, which accumulates in the bean during roasting and prevents the flavor of coffee from being revealed during brewing, while preventing oxygen from entering the product. When buying ground coffee in a jar, you need to study the storage conditions: perhaps the jar needs to stand open for some time to let out the remaining carbon dioxide. Metallized packaging with a valve does not require such manipulations, it is more convenient. There is also a drip coffee option – it is natural ground coffee packaged in individual packages in a gaseous environment, which retains the taste and aroma of the product. The bag is designed for one time, you can brew it in hot water.

Popular questions and answers

How to store and brew ground coffee?
Ground coffee quickly loses its taste and aromatic properties due to the intensive weathering of volatile substances. After opening the package, try to use the product as soon as possible. To extend the life of ground coffee, store it in a dark, dry place in a tightly closed container with a special valve without oxygen entering.

Do not store coffee in the freezer. When defrosting, the product will be covered with condensate, which will quickly be absorbed and spoil the taste of the drink.

There are several options for brewing ground coffee. First of all, it is necessary to proceed from the size of the grinding. If the grinding is fine, then it is better suited for espresso or Turkish coffee. Coarse grinding is suitable for drip types of brewing. You can also brew ground coffee the old fashioned way: put a couple of spoons in a cup, pour boiling water over it, stir and let stand for a couple of minutes.

Are coffee beans and ground coffee very different?
Ground coffee, of course, is very different from grain coffee. As soon as the grain is ground, the degassing process starts. The oils begin to evaporate, releasing flavors and aromas. The product becomes more susceptible to external odors by absorbing them.

To preserve the taste of coffee, it is best to grind the right amount of grain and immediately brew it, as is done in coffee shops. The longer you wait, the more the ground product disappears.

Should I buy flavored ground coffee?

Coffee is a complex product with over 1000 organic and inorganic compounds. All these substances, as well as the type of processing, transportation and roasting of the grain form a unique taste.

Adding flavoring to coffee kills important flavor and aroma elements. Therefore, we do not recommend choosing such products. Those who like to experiment with flavors are advised to buy good coffee and add high-quality syrup, sugar or spices to it already in the process of preparation. It will turn out unusually, and at the same time, nothing will prevent the grain from opening to the fullest. For example, Turkish coffee goes well with halva, ginger and cinnamon, if they are first added to the Turk along with the ground product.
