How to choose the right loose green tea

Tips for choosing quality loose leaf green tea is shared Ilya Botenkov, expert on Chinese teas, founder of the tea club “Mao”.

  1. Ideally, green tea should be refrigerated to preserve the maximum of its beneficial properties. Experienced tea shop owners know this. If you keep green tea at room temperature and often open the jar, it will lose some of its properties, change its taste a little, and the aroma will not be so bright.
  2. When choosing tea, pay attention to the integrity of the leaf. It shouldn’t be slightly broken. The tea jar should not contain a large amount of tea dust at the bottom.
  3. Choose only the tea that does not contain aromatic additives. There is nothing useful in them. Additives are needed in order to make a person want to buy a product. Most often, not the freshest tea raw materials, possibly already stale, are used to flavor teas. It is unlikely to sell, so the big tea factories add aromatic oils, pretty flowers, or dried fruit to give the tea a whole new look and sell it under a different name.
  4. Tea reveals its aroma when you breathe on it. At tea ceremonies, before brewing tea, you need to “listen” to its aroma, that is, to smell it. To do this, guests pick up a chahe – a box for exploring tea, make 3-4 inhalations and exhalations for tea. When you warm the tea with your warmth, it gives off its wonderful light aroma. When shopping for tea, ask to have the tea poured into a container to get to know the tea. Listen to the aroma and look at the integrity of the leaf. The scent you like the most is yours.
  5. Pay attention to the behavior of the tea seller. A person who really loves his job and lives for it will not offer aromatics in the first place, will not talk about benefits and impose a product. A good salesperson will talk about the tea, learn about your preferences, your blood pressure, and recommend the tea that is right for you.
  6. When choosing green tea, pay attention to prices. Why is one tea more expensive and the other cheaper? Why in one store the same, at first glance, types of tea are sold at 1000 rubles per 100 g, and in another – at 5000 rubles per 100 g? It is of great importance from which trees the tea is collected and from which region it is. There are tea trees that are 1000 years old, and there are trees or shrubs that are 50 years old. It would seem that teas are similar in appearance, but the prices are different.
  7. There is no categorization in tea culture. Every person likes their tea. To find it, you need to try hundreds of types, so it is wise to take several types of tea to sample.

There are no good or bad green teas. Everyone has different goals for drinking tea. Some drink flavored green tea or tea bags. Someone drinks tea with sweets. Someone needs tea to calm the mind and watch how taste changes, state and what happens to thoughts. The process of watching tea is relaxation. Eastern wisdom says – we rest when our brain rests. And tea is a good tool to relax and listen to yourself.
