Prison is one of the harshest places to serve a sentence for criminals. Some deservedly end up in places of deprivation of liberty, others, by the will of fate, unfairly end up behind bars. A lot of films were shot about the life of prisoners in the zone.

10 To Turya
“To Turya” (1989) – a film of American cinema that tells about the fate of one of the prisoners, Frank Leon. He roughly behaves behind bars, but after a while he decides to escape. Frank is caught and gets extra time. The recidivist makes an enemy in the person of Warden Dramgul, the head of the colony. The director of the prison, who received a black spot on his reputation because of Frank, is going to take revenge on the prisoner. He provokes a recidivist to another escape in order to put Leon behind bars forever.
9. Prisoner R
“A prisoner R” (2009) – a crime drama about the prison life of a prisoner R. The convicted person goes to prison for rape. The prison you end up in R is particularly cruel. The rapist is placed in a cell with especially dangerous convicts who fix their own rules and laws. The new cellmate will have to learn to play by the rules of the prison world and fight to save his own skin in harsh conditions.
8. Приговор
“Приговор” (2010) is an American drama based on real events. The plot revolves around Betty Ann, whose brother Kenny Wortas goes to jail, on a murder charge. Kenny faces a life sentence. Wortas’ sister, confident in his innocence, decides to do everything possible to secure his release. A woman receives a law degree and conducts further investigation into the murder case in order to prove the innocence of a relative. Prison is not where her brother should be.
7. Escape plan
“Escape plan” (2013) – an action movie with Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger who are not losing ground. Ray Breslin, a design engineer and test engineer, develops prison security systems. He is invited to test ready-made systems. Ray gets out of any prison. Already about to retire, he receives an offer he could not refuse – to escape from a prison for especially dangerous criminals. All he knew was the name – “The Tomb”. Only when he gets there, Ray realizes that he was set up: you should not count on the evacuation code, it simply does not work, and the head of the prison is not favorable to him. After analyzing, Ray comes to the conclusion that the chances of escaping are zero. And only with the support of the prisoner Emil Rothmayer, he decides to do the impossible.
6. In hell
“In hell” (2003) – American thriller about the most brutal prison of all time, which is called “Bloody”. This is where the main character of the film, Kyle, gets for the unlawful reprisal of the murderer of his wife. Arriving in this prison, the hero realizes that there is complete chaos, like hell. Prisoners are brutally abused by guards, and higher authorities arrange illegal fights between criminals. All those who have fallen into the infernal lair lose all human qualities and turn into creatures with animal instincts. But Kyle does not intend to succumb to local laws and is going to get out of a terrible place.
5. Experiment
“Experiment” (2000) is a psychological thriller about an unusual experiment by scientists. For its implementation, two groups of volunteers are found. Some of them will be prisoners, while others will be guards. The subjects are given instructions that they must strictly follow when they enter the prison walls. If all the conditions of the experiment are met, then each participant will be paid a good amount of reward. Scientists did not even suspect that the situation could get so out of control. Reveling in power without restraint, the test guards enter into character and begin brutally beating the prisoners. But the authors of the experiment are not going to disrupt the course of events and remain on the sidelines as observers. A rebellion is brewing, which can result in the most nightmarish consequences.
4. Escape from Alcatraz
“Escape from Alcatraz” (1976) is a film about imprisoned bank robber Frank Moriss. He is placed in the most reliable prison of Alcatraz, where all the eminent criminals served time, and not one managed to escape from there. The prison is isolated from the outside world, as it is located on the island. Frank is a recidivist who did not manage to escape the walls of any prison with the help of escaping. Now he faces a new task – to come up with a plan on how to escape from Alcatraz and leave the island. In this he will be helped by like-minded people. The picture received good reviews from viewers and film critics and is included in the top ten best films about the prison.

“law abiding citizen” (2009) – American thriller about one of the decent residents of Philadelphia, Clyde Alexander Shelton. Clyde is a happy family man, and suddenly loses everything. His wife and child are killed by thieves who entered the house. Shelton seeks a fair trial for the killers. The bandits make a deal with a lawyer and are released due to insufficient evidence. Heartbroken and the decision of justice, Clyde is not going to leave everything like that. He decides to take revenge not only on the killers of his family, but on the entire justice system. Shelton goes to jail and begins a series of murders with his participation. Law enforcement agencies are at a loss, and the former law-abiding citizen keeps the whole city in fear while in prison. Only Assistant District Attorney Nick Rice manages to uncover the prisoner’s revenge plan and neutralize him.
2. Green Mile
“Green Mile” (1999) is a drama film based on the mystical novel by Stephen King. One of the main characters in the film, the black man John Coffey goes to jail because of the accusation of the brutal murder of children. After a while, John will be taken to the electric chair. While he is waiting for his turn behind bars, the Negro meets the prison overseer, Paul Edgecomb. Paul learns about the convict’s miraculous gift and his non-involvement in the murder. John cures the overseer of an illness that the doctors couldn’t help him with. The caretaker faces a difficult choice: break the law and free John, or lead him to execution. The film was awarded the Saturn and other awards.
1. The Shawshank Redemption
“The Shawshank Redemption” (1994) is a drama from American cinema, which occupies a leading position in all lists of the best films. In the center of the plot is the banker Andy Dufresne, convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. Fate played a cruel joke on the man, since he did not commit a crime. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and ends up in Shawshank High Security Prison. This place of deprivation of liberty is distinguished by special cruelty and lawlessness. No one has ever managed to escape from here. Andy is going to do the impossible – to escape from prison hell. All he has is hope and a longing desire for freedom. The film received numerous awards and was nominated for an Oscar seven times.
