How to choose a jigsaw
We learned about how to choose the right jigsaw for work from the sales assistant of the Tool Rental store. Zouraba Gigauri.
Older jigsaws always required the use of a hex wrench or other tool to install or remove blades. Now you need to look for models with a lever-action blade change function that does not require an additional tool. Some jigsaws have a feature that blows a stream of air over the workpiece just in front of the blade. This keeps the cutting line free of sawdust and debris, making it easier to follow the cutting line. Pay attention to this too.
When you need to make curved cuts, especially on plywood, chipboard, or other relatively thin materials, few power tools are as handy as a jigsaw. Expensive, good jigsaws have two main characteristics that justify their extra cost: extra features and variable speed. A number of other features are less critical but may be important to you. More on this below.
Orbital action
The standard jigsaw moves the blade exclusively up and down, while the orbital jigsaw moves the blade slightly forward and up. The blade movement is slightly elliptical, which minimizes blade wear and eliminates the rattling action that sometimes occurs with cheaper blades. The angle of action can usually be adjusted for different types of materials. The cuts on an orbital jigsaw are almost always smoother than when using a standard jigsaw.
variable speed
Higher grade jigsaws will have variable speed. While not always necessary in woodworking, it is especially useful if the jigsaw is being used to cut metals, where lower speeds make cutting better. Slower speeds can also be helpful when making complex curved cuts. Although they may be used infrequently, variable speed is a feature that is worth the extra cost for most people.
Engine power
Like most tools, higher amperage values indicate jigsaws that have more cutting power. The best jigsaws will have motor power of 300 watts or more.
Corded or cordless
Most manufacturers now offer cordless jigsaws. While historically these tools have been nowhere near as powerful as their wired counterparts, recent improvements in battery technology have narrowed the gap. However, if you are buying a single jigsaw, the corded model is still the best choice as it will handle all stock and all cutting duties with ease.
Laser guide line
Some of the latest jigsaws come with a laser guide that projects a thin red cutting line from the front of the saw, similar to the laser lines often found on modern circular saws. This can be a useful feature for maintaining a straight cutting line with a jigsaw, which is naturally prone to twisting when you try to follow a straight line.
