What are cocoons for newborns
Cocoon diapers
An alternative to the good old swaddling method, which not all new mothers can handle well. The diaper-cocoon is shaped like a small bag, it can be with a zipper or Velcro. It is easy to swaddle a newborn in such a cocoon – this way he will be in a limited space, but at the same time he will be able to move his arms and legs.
cocoon nest
It is a small flat mattress with soft sides around the perimeter. Such cocoons are made according to special patented patterns, foam rubber is usually used for the mattress, holofiber filler is used for the sides, and the fabric is natural cotton. The nest can be used up to about 5-6 months.
classic cocoon
An ergonomic mattress for a newborn is considered a classic. It has an anatomical shape that repeats the outlines of the baby’s body, at the base there are bends, sides and a number of other features, thanks to which the child is in a cocoon in a position close to fetal: the back is slightly rounded, the shoulders are forward, the chin is pressed to the chest, the legs are tucked in. At the same time, the baby’s movements are not limited in any way: he can stare around, studying different objects, move his arms and legs.
They came up with a cocoon in France initially for premature babies. Specialists were looking for a way to create the most optimal conditions for adaptation for them. But then cocoons appeared in wide sale, and parents of children born on time began to actively use them.
How to choose a cocoon for a newborn
A few years ago, parents didn’t have much of a choice. Only imported cocoons could be found on sale, which were quite expensive. But recently, ergonomic mattresses for newborns have also been produced in Our Country. Today in children’s stores you can find cocoons of different brands, they differ in design, color, additional characteristics, as well as price. What should you pay attention to when choosing a cocoon?
Size
Cocoons come in three different sizes. Most of the products on the market are in the standard third size, which are suitable for newborns from 2,8 kilograms. But if it so happened that your baby was born prematurely, and you are discharged home with less weight, then such a bed will be too big for him. In this case, you should choose a cocoon of a different size.
cocoon base
It should be made of flexible high density polyurethane foam. This material is able to follow the shape of the body, it is also used for the production of orthopedic pillows.
Waterproof protection
The base of the cocoon must be in a protective waterproof cover, it can be removable or non-removable.
Sheet material
Usually one removable sheet comes with a cocoon, sometimes there can be two. Pay attention to the quality of the material from which it is made. It should be completely natural fabric, 100% cotton is best. Do not forget about the quality of the seams: the lines should be even, clear, without protruding threads.
Design
Some manufacturers are trying to experiment with colors and make models in bright colors: for example, dark blue cocoon or red. They look very stylish. But still, it is better to give preference to light and pastel colors traditional for babies – dyes are not used in such fabrics.
The weight
All cocoons are quite light in weight – from 1 to 2,1 kg. Consider this option when choosing. The less the model weighs, the easier it will be for you to move it around the house with your newborn, take it with you on a visit, on the road.
limit roller
Mandatory component of the cocoon. It is placed under the baby’s legs, thanks to which the child does not slide down and takes a position close to its position in the mother’s stomach. The cushion must be removable, have Velcro for fixing on the base of the cocoon so that the mattress can “grow” with the child.
Safety belt
Another obligatory detail of the cocoon. A special wide belt made of soft fabric with Velcro gently but securely fixes the baby in a cocoon. Don’t neglect its use.
And one more important point. Do not be shy and ask the sellers for a product certificate confirming the safety of using a cocoon for children.
Benefits of a cocoon for newborns
- Being in a cocoon in a position close to intrauterine, the newborn passes through the adaptation period easier in the first months, feels more comfortable, safer, sleeps better.
- The raised legs position helps to reduce the intensity of gas formation and colic, which torment many newborns in the first months.
- Prevents the risk of developing flat head syndrome, because it is not lying on a flat surface, the child can easily rotate the head, it is more convenient for him to study everything around in this position.
- The cocoon is very light, it is convenient for mom to move it around the house, you can take it with you on the road, for example, on a train, on a visit, in your parent’s bed, if you practice co-sleeping. Pediatricians have nothing against such ergonomic mattresses for newborns, but advise parents to use them without fanaticism.
- The cocoon helps some children to adapt to the new world more easily. But you should not keep the child in it around the clock. Change its position: take it in your hands, lay it on a hard surface, including on your stomach. It is very important that the baby develops correctly, learns to hold his head, roll over and master other skills. You can’t use a cocoon for more than three months, as it limits the baby’s motor activity.
- The base of the cocoon should be like any mattress for children – dense. Materials with shape memory for newborns are not desirable.
Popular questions and answers
At what age can the cocoon be used?
Is there a limit on the time that a child can spend in a cocoon without harm to health?
Whether or not a baby needs a cocoon is up to the parents to decide. As an orthopedist, I can say unequivocally – this is not a vital device for a child. But he creates very good conditions for both parents (and the comfort of mom and dad is very important!), And for a little person. If the financial resources of the family allow you to purchase a cocoon, then I’m all for it.
But every parent must understand very clearly that the child should not have any deviations in the state of neck health.
But for the formation of healthy hip joints, the cocoon is simply beautiful, it creates all the conditions for breeding legs, extension in the hip and knee joints.
What are the requirements for the mattress itself?
If a parent believes that he cannot do without a cocoon, should he, for example, give the child some specific massage or gymnastics?
We know that the younger the child, the longer he sleeps. Gradually growing up, he begins to stay awake more time and during this period you need to work with the baby – do gymnastics, light massage, spread on the tummy, strengthen all muscle groups. Usually medical pediatric nurses teach young mothers how to do gymnastics and massage for babies up to three months of age.
I repeat, the wakefulness of the baby should be carried out in some other place – on the bed, on the sofa, maybe on the changing table – where the mother will work with him and where he can move, develop, play.
