The benefits and harm of milk

The benefits and harm of milk

On June 1, the whole world celebrates Milk Day. The holiday was established back in 2001 at the suggestion of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. Since then, the tradition has become widespread in many countries around the world. Well, on this occasion, we decided to dispel the most popular myths about the drink familiar from childhood.

Myth # 1: Milk is bad for adults

There is a widespread belief that it is useless for adults to drink milk – supposedly in the human body, useful substances from milk are simply not absorbed.

Do not believe it! All adults cannot be combed with the same brush. Milk should not be drunk if you are lactose intolerant or allergic to milk protein.

“To dispel all questions regarding milk, you need to pass a molecular genetic test for lactase deficiency. And the sooner this analysis is done, the better, ”says a general practitioner, nephrologist, nutritionist Regina Akhunyanova.

According to the expert, there are three types of lactose intolerance: the first, rather rare, when dairy products are not tolerated at all, fermented milk – in small quantities. The second type is more common – when cheese, cottage cheese and yogurt are absorbed perfectly, but problems with whole milk can arise. The third – there are only about 20 percent of such people – when a person can eat any dairy products at any time and without negative consequences.

But an allergy to milk protein in adults is extremely rare, at least in regions where dairy farming has been developed since ancient times.

Myth # 2: Milk has a long shelf life because it contains antibiotics.

Or, what good, preservatives. Of course it is not! Long shelf life of milk is provided by heat treatment.

For example, unopened UHT milk can be stored at room temperature for up to six months. This became possible due to the fact that during the ultra-pasteurization process the milk is heated to 137 degrees, kept at the maximum temperature for only 4 seconds, and then sharply cooled. This is necessary in order for a sharp temperature drop to destroy viruses, microbes, mold, spores, while maintaining the beneficial properties of milk. Then it is poured into aseptic six-layer packages – they are opaque, sealed and reliably protect milk from light, air, moisture and bacteria.

Thanks to this processing, milk can be stored for up to 6 months and at the same time retains vitamins and microelements, and sealed packaging protects milk from souring.

Myth # 3: Drinking a lot of milk can help you gain weight quickly.

Athletes and bodybuilders do use milk to gain muscle mass quickly. But you are unlikely to want to repeat their feats – in these special sports diets for gaining weight, it is recommended to drink at least a liter of milk a day – a glass every 3-4 hours!

Usually, medical advice on milk consumption does not exceed 1-2 glasses of milk per day. With this amount of milk, if you follow a normal, balanced diet, you will definitely not get better.

Myth number 4: milk helps you lose weight

There is some truth in this myth. Milk itself is not a fat-burning product. Nutritionists even consider it not a drink, but food – it is so full of various nutrients, from proteins and fats to vitamins and trace elements. A mug of milk is actually one meal. But it has a magical property: milk fills the stomach and creates the illusion of satiety. It’s much easier to hold out from lunch to dinner this way. But you need to choose milk not the fattest, but with a fat content of 1-2,5 percent. However, how to lose weight with milk has long been spelled out by supporters of the milk diet.

Myth 5: cow milk is healthier

Raw milk purchased from the markets is a breeding ground for bacteria, mold, spores and viruses. To reduce the risk of infection, raw milk can be boiled, but then benefits are sacrificed – the beneficial substances in milk will not withstand long home temperature processing. Really high-quality, safe and healthy milk can be easily found on the shelf in the store. In milk from a sealed box or a securely closed bottle, there will definitely not be any dirty trick.

Myth # 6: Milk contains a lot of sugar.

Milk contains lactose, which can be called milk sugar. It is a natural carbohydrate. Many people compare it to table sugar or chocolate milk, which contains sucrose. But this is an incorrect comparison, since in the whole product it is a natural carbohydrate, and in chocolate it is added.

Myth 7: milk protects against brittle bones

Yes, the calcium in milk actually makes bones stronger. But in order for calcium to be absorbed, it must be taken “in company” with vitamin D. If you do not forget about this, then 1-2 glasses of milk a day (every day) will really serve you well.

But too zealous with milk is also not worth it. Studies have shown that drinking more than three glasses of the drink daily makes bones more fragile. Therefore, balance and be healthy.

By the way

A versatile dairy product that suits everyone is yogurt. It does not cause allergies, unlike its “big brother”, and the lactic acid bacteria contained in it help maintain a normal balance of intestinal microflora. At the same time, there is no less calcium in yogurt than in milk. But you only need to choose natural yogurt with a short shelf life, others will be completely useless for health.
