The baby’s eyes are tearing: what to do, why, reasons
When a baby’s eye is watering, there are several versions of this phenomenon. Sometimes a baby needs medical attention, but something can pass without the intervention of a doctor. It is necessary to identify the starting point of the problem before starting treatment.
Why is there a tear in one eye
Sometimes a baby has a tear in one eye. There are no signs of inflammation, but the situation does not change either at home or on the street. Eye drops do not give a positive result, and rinsing with tea are also useless.
Most likely, the baby has dacryocystitis, that is, a blockage of the lacrimal canal. This is a congenital pathology in which the baby was born with a film formed in the nasolacrimal canal, which prevents the tear from passing into the nasopharynx.
What to do with dacryocystitis
The problem with the normal passage of tears can resolve on its own in 3-8 months: the film will simply break through. If this does not happen, the doctor conducts a sounding of the nasolacrimal canal. Gently massaging the tear sacs can also improve the situation.
Do not diagnose a baby yourself. Seeing a doctor is necessary if:
- the baby is not yet 1 year old;
- with photophobia;
- if the eyes hurt;
- bubbles appeared on the upper eyelid.
The last symptom may indicate a serious illness – herpes conjunctivitis.
Other causes of watery eyes
If the blockage of the lacrimal canal gives no other symptoms besides wet eyes, then other problems can be accompanied by redness, itching and purulent discharge. Take a closer look at the baby, tears may appear:
- with infectious conjunctivitis, in this case, the eye will itch and swell;
- with allergic conjunctivitis, the symptoms are similar, the allergy occurs when exposed to pollen, animal hair, or as a reaction to a particular type of food;
- with ARVI;
- with ENT diseases;
- if a foreign body gets in.
Depending on the origin, the baby needs different help. Mom can sometimes pull out a foreign body herself. To do this, you need to hold a wet swab dipped in boiled water several times over the child’s closed eye in the direction “towards the nose.” If this does not help, go to the doctor.
Doctors treat an infectious disease with antibiotics; in case of allergies, it is necessary to identify the source. Lachrymation in ARVI and ENT diseases disappears when the underlying disease is defeated.
Tears can be caused by a speck or a formidable disease. Take a closer look at your baby, you may need to visit a doctor.
