The American died after visiting a water park. There he contracted a “brain-eating” amoeba

When Fabrizio Stabile went to the BSR Cable Park in Texas, he did not think it would lead to such tragic consequences. While taking a bath in one of the pools, the man contracted a “brain-eating” amoeba, which quickly led to the death of the man’s brain and death.

The infection came when 29-year-old Fabrizio was swimming in a surf pool. The very next day he developed very intense headaches. The complaints were so severe that the man was unable to get up from the bed or speak clearly. High fever and confusion soon followed.

Doctors had a real problem with the diagnosis. At first, they equated the symptoms with meningitis. Only detailed studies have shown that in the cerebrospinal fluid Fabrizio Stabile lives a very dangerous amoeba – Naegleria fowleri, colloquially called “brain-eating”. Unfortunately, it was too late for the rescue – he died the day after the American diagnosis. His brain died.

Amoeba Naegleria fowleri lives in lakes, rivers, hot springs and other warm freshwater reservoirs. It can also be found in poorly cleaned swimming pools or jacuzzis. Contact with this protozoan may result in a rare but very dangerous infection. The worst situation is when the amoeba reaches the nose and, consequently, the brain, where it begins to multiply rapidly and “eat up” the nervous tissue. Symptoms of its presence are severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, problems with vision, concentration, balance disorders and even hallucinations. As a consequence, acute primary amoebic encephalitis and meningitis develops. Death can occur in as little as 72 hours.

Unfortunately, there is no effective way to defend yourself against an amoeba. The US Department of Health only recommends that you do not allow your nose to be submerged in water while bathing in fresh, warm waters, or you can try to block it with a special clip.
