The amber necklace when baby has a toothache: does it work?
Because it is difficult to see her baby in pain, it is very tempting to have her wear an amber necklace to relieve the symptoms of teething. But does this grandmother’s remedy really keep its promises?
What is an amber necklace?
Halfway between jewelry and childcare equipment, the amber necklace is an accessory intended to relieve teething toddlers. Available in stores and on sites specializing in the distribution of natural products, the amber necklace is also available in the form of a bracelet supposed to have the same properties. Rich in promise, these products often feature prominently on birth lists.
Where does the interest in the amber necklace come from?
Semi-precious stone, amber is a plant resin which has the property of regulating and harmonizing the circulation of energies throughout the body. This is why it is advisable to put it in contact with babies’ skin to reduce their dental pain and relax them.
Is it scientifically proven?
No study has ever demonstrated the analgesic power of amber necklaces on teething. This is why, in accordance with Article L. 5122-15 of the Public Health Code, manufacturers and resellers do not have the right to extol the healing properties of these products, the latter not having been scientifically proven. This also explains why pharmacists are prohibited from selling it in their pharmacies.
Potentially dangerous collars
Like all jewelry worn around the neck, amber dental necklaces put toddlers at risk of strangulation if they get caught anywhere. Regarding models that attach to the wrist or ankle, it is not much better: in case of rupture, baby can choke on swallowing the stones. Since 2012, the French Society of Pediatrics therefore formally advises against the wearing of this type of accessory. In addition, the General Directorate for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control regularly issues recall notices for collars that do not meet safety standards.
What to do when your baby has a toothache?
To relieve your child, it is better to trust effective and safe methods.
- Offer her a teething ring to chew on. This “self-massage” will decongest his gums and reduce the inflammation at the origin of his pain. Some models can be placed in the refrigerator to take advantage of the numbing effect of the cold. But not all babies enjoy their touch.
- Several times a day, gently massage his sore gum tissue with a clean finger coated with dental balm. Be careful, these calming balms often contain sugar, then take the time to rinse their gums with a clean, damp cloth.
- Give him 2 granules of Chamomilla 9 CH diluted in a little water 15 minutes before his meals.
