The 82-year-old gave his kidney to his son. There are known cases of even older donors

An 82-year-old man donated a kidney to his 53-year-old son. The transplant, which was carried out in Turin in the north of Italy, was considered unprecedented due to the age of the donor. The successful surgery was announced on Wednesday, on the eve of World Kidney Day.

The transplant was performed in January at the Molinette hospital in Turin, which specializes, among other things, in such surgeries.

«I didn’t do anything special. There is nothing more normal for a father than to do what can improve his child’s life, »Ansa Pasquale Longo, who donated a kidney to his son, told the agency.

  1. «I did not want my husband to be a donor. He didn’t let himself translate it »
  2. «I gave my wife a kidney so that we could live normally. It was the best way »

The older man assured me that he was feeling as well as before the surgery. His son had glomerulonephritis, had been taking medications for years and had an iron diet. In the fall of 2020, it became apparent that dialysis would be required. That’s why his father decided to help him.

“My son is now full of energy and content and I am happy,” added the donor.

It is worth adding that the Italian was not the oldest living donor at all. In 2012, the media reported that an 83-year-old Briton donated a kidney to a person waiting for a transplant. In 2019, an 84-year-old American gave his kidney to a neighbor.
