A 36-year-old with a severe course of COVID-19
According to «NTO», the 36-year-old woman contracted the SARS-CoV-32 coronavirus in the 2nd week of pregnancy and fell ill with COVID-19. She had no comorbidities. The symptoms she felt were typical of a COVID-19 infection – she complained of a cough and a fever. Then there was also shortness of breath.
Due to her health condition, the medics decided to transport the pregnant woman to the hospital in Kędzierzyn Koźle. At the time of admission to the ward, her condition was considered “average”. Unfortunately, the patient’s health deteriorated within 24 hours.
-The patient was qualified for oxygen therapy, as well as for the plasma therapy of convalescents – said Dr. Jacek Mazur, deputy medical director at the Independent Public Healthcare Complex in Kędzierzyn-Koźle, quoted by «NTO».
The woman’s condition continued to deteriorate, so the doctors decided that if the saturation dropped below 88 percent, the you will have to save the baby by performing a caesarean section. The pregnant woman agreed to such a solution. Unfortunately, they had to be applied the very next day.
As Dr. Mazur said, the woman’s child was born in the 32nd week of pregnancy. «She weighed 1970 grams and scored 7 on the Apgar scale. The newborn was transferred to the hospital in Opole, while the woman was transferred to the intensive care unit of the hospital in Kędzierzyn-Koźle ».
The young woman could not be saved
Unfortunately, despite the efforts of doctors and the administration of successive doses of plasma from convalescents, the condition of the woman continued to deteriorate. The virus completely destroyed the patient’s lungs, and the only chance of recovery was a transplant of these organs. The woman was qualified for such a procedure in Zabrze. However, it was not possible to save her.
