Textured paint for walls: how to apply (paint) with your own hands

Many have seen walls painted in terrible colors, and sometimes with peeling paint. It is no coincidence that wallpapers became very popular, with the help of which it was possible to give the walls an attractive look and individuality at a low price. Progress in the field of creating and improving paints and varnishes does not stand still – the paints from the Soviet era are being replaced by modern textured paints.

Textured paint – a decorative coating that allows you to get on the surface of various reliefs (up to 3 mm deep), which depend only on the skill and imagination of the performer.

It was textured paints that began to be preferred to wallpaper, as they have a number of undeniable advantages:

  • the coating hides minor wall defects, therefore it does not require careful surface preparation;
  • has high hardness (used as anti-vandal);
  • water- and weatherproof;
  • vapor-permeable – the walls will “breathe”;
  • can be used on facades and for interior decoration.
This is not a rusty sheet of iron – this is a “Steel” finish created using Dali’s textured paint! It all depends on your imagination!

Where can I find coating samples?

Ideally it is better to evaluate the approximate result live. If the store specializes in texture paints, then samples should also be provided.

A shop sample of applying textured Lacra paint with a roller. We note right away that even a person without special skills in painting is able to make such a fur coat (see video below)

The video uses a “coarse foam” roller. It is tougher and denser than usual. The structure is cellular, with an average size of 2-3 mm.

If it is not possible to see samples in the store, you can view the options on the Internet. We have put together a small selection of photographs illustrating the possible effects.

Various colors and prices

The following textured paints are heard:

  • Alpina
  • Dali
  • COLOUR

Lacra is an inexpensive textured paint. A bucket of 18 kg can be bought at a price of 1200 rubles. From the category of “cheap and cheerful”

Now you will not surprise anyone with a large spread in prices for the same product. Paints are no exception, so do not rush to order textured paint in the first online store that comes across. For example, let’s see what you can find on the Internet and at what price.

The last price in the VseInstrumenty store was 2433 rubles for a bucket of 15 kg

Until now, there are a large number of hardware stores that are not represented on the Internet. Accordingly, you can find out about the availability of a particular product in them only by visiting the store.

In a small hardware store, the same DALI-DECOR Invoice paint costs almost 500 rubles cheaper. Significant savings can be made for larger jobs

Color palette of paints

As a rule, textured paints are produced in a white base. The desired shade is achieved through the use of highly concentrated tinting pastes or tinting paints. You should use textured paint and color from the same manufacturer.

A decorative layer obtained with textured paint can be painted over. That is, first you can apply textured paint without adding color, and paint on top in the desired color.

Facade paint is applied in one layer. To color the decorative layer, paints with a lower consistency are used, for example, DALI-DECOR BASE.

How to apply (video instructions)

Before starting work, be sure to read the instructions for using textured paint on the package. Consider the following important points:

On a 15 kg bucket it may be indicated that it is enough for 20 m² – in reality it can only be enough for 10 m². Consumption of 1-1,5 kg per square meter is a common thing.

Do not dilute the paint over the norm – if it is indicated that no more than 5% of water can be added, then you should not add more, in the expectation that the paint will be enough for a larger area.

With manual tinting, you should immediately tint the entire amount of paint necessary for work, otherwise there is a high probability that you will “not hit the color” when tinting the next batch of material.

Textured paint can hide minor defects in the base, but what are minor defects? Since the paint has a high consistency, it will cope with microcracks without problems. Do not try to hide the relief stripes of 1-2 mm – they will be perfectly visible.

The surface of the wall was not properly leveled, moreover, the textured paint was diluted with water in excess of the norm. After applying with a roller, the result was terrible. Don’t make other people’s mistakes!

The method of applying textured paint depends on what you want to get in the end. Below are a few videos demonstrating how to get one or another coverage.
