Wallpapers made of silk, linen or cotton are ideal for interiors in classic or ethnic styles. We understand the “intricacies” of fabric coverings.
What it is: The definition of “textile wallpaper” includes coverings, the surface of which is made of fabric – natural (silk, linen, cotton), artificial (viscose, acetate) or blended.
Which rooms are suitable for: They can be used in almost all areas except bathrooms, swimming pools, saunas and kitchens. By the way, such restrictions are easy to explain. Excessive moisture negatively affects the appearance of textile wallpapers and shortens their lifespan. And, of course, textiles, like a sponge, absorb grease and odors.
Life time: according to the assurances of experts, the service life of textile wallpaper can reach 10 years.
Handmade wallpaper. Exclusive and expensive
The basis for these roll wallpapers is paper, on which natural fabric is glued on top – most often silk or velvet. The drawing is applied by hand using special forms according to the technology used 200 and more years ago. It is clear that there are not too many factories working in this area. This means that in order to get the desired number of rolls from the collection they like, the buyer will not only have to shell out an impressive amount of money (say, 1 linear meter of wallpaper from the Grande Douche collection from the French factory Zuber will cost about 6600 rubles), but also be patient.
Roll textile wallpaper requires an absolutely flat base, because any defect appears on their surface
The term for the execution of the order. Waiting for an order can stretch from the usual two weeks or months to a year. It’s all about the production technology. Therefore, if this year the collection you liked was in high demand and did not lie in stock, you still have to wait for the resumption of its production.
Installation. These coverings are sold in rolls and they are mounted like the most common wallpaper. True, with the use of an adhesive designed for heavier coatings. In addition, the canvases are not glued overlapping, but end-to-end and connected very accurately, without gaps and gaps. Ideally, after finishing the installation, there is a feeling of a single plane. That is why the work of gluing textile wallpaper is estimated by specialized companies about twice as expensive as the installation of conventional paper, vinyl and non-woven coverings – about 450 rubles / m2.
Hand-painted silk wallpaper. Ideal for chinoiserie-style interiors
These hand-painted silk wallpapers are separate canvases, or rather, a composition of several component parts, which are prepared for a specific room. The plots, like the production technology, are historical. Peonies, seated pheasants and Chinese pavilions are the main graphic motifs in the chinoiserie style. You independently choose the layout and dimensions of the product being created (whether it will be located around the entire perimeter of the room or used as a panel on one of the walls), the plot, the background color, and also decide whether embroidery is necessary. It can either be absent altogether, or partially supplement or completely duplicate hand painting. If the issue of embroidery has been resolved positively, you still have to decide on the shades of silk threads.
This historic method of wallpaper production is used by de Gournay and Fromental factories (both in the UK).
The term for the execution of the order. The whole process takes quite a long time – the minimum order execution time is 2,5–3 months.
It is possible to remove dirt from textile wallpaper only by dry cleaning, water and any detergents are prohibited
Mounting. Together with the order, the client receives drawings with wall sweeps, where each “cut” is assigned a specific serial number. Do you think you just have to stick them in the right order? It was not so! To begin with, after carefully leveling the walls – plastering and puttingtying – several months should pass. Then a primer is applied to the base and thick white paper is glued. Then a special glue is applied directly to the wallpaper. The countdown of the time required to hold the oiled canvases is literally minute by minute. If you overexpose, the silk will simply peel off from the paper base. It is clear that the installation of such wallpaper can only be done by a qualified specialist. And one more thing: after editing, it may turn out that some genre scenes need to be painted on – after all, both the painting and the embroidery were carried out manually, and therefore some inconsistency of elements is more than likely.

Factory made wallpaper. Saving time, effort and money
Hand-made coatings have certain drawbacks: either limited edition, or long production time. Therefore, if time is running out and you do not want to spend a fortune on wall decoration, it makes sense to immediately include in the estimate only those textile wallpapers that are produced using modern technologies. Moreover, there is plenty to choose from. These are rolled textile coverings with a base made of paper, dralon or non-woven non-woven interlining. In this case, a woven fabric acts as a decorative layer, on which a pattern (and embroidery) is applied by a machine. The most popular, inexpensive and easy to care for are blended fibers. Such coatings are produced by Arlin (Italy), Calcutta and Omexco (Belgium). Expensive linen and silk (from 2500 rubles / peg. M) are used less often. Coverings made of natural fibers are present in the assortment of the Elitis (France) and Giardini (Italy) factories.
Installation: like ordinary wallpaper, they are glued vertically to the walls in a joint.
Seamless coverings. The walls do not need to be leveled!
These wallpapers are produced, for example, by Bekaert Walltextiles, Belgium and La Scala, Italy. Their peculiarity is the way of installation. The features of seamless textile coatings are high density and thickness and, accordingly, improved performance of sound and heat insulation. It happens that thin foam rubber is used as a substrate. This enhances the soundproofing performance of the room even more.
Installation: Such canvases are glued, unwinding not along the height of the wall, but along it. Due to the solid width (depending on the factory, it can be 2,6–3,1 m) and the length of the coatings (up to 100 m), it is possible to avoid a large number of seams. It is considered optimal if there is only one joint. Usually it is hidden in the farthest corner, behind the curtain, due to which the coating is perceived as a whole. Door and window openings are cut after the installation of the entire canvas. To mask the cut edges, platbands are hung on the doors, and window openings are decorated with corners. The services of a specialist for the installation of a seamless canvas are estimated at about 600 rubles / m2. By the way, most of the seamless coatings can not be glued, but pulled parallel to the walls, fixing from above and below with slats, like a canvas on a stretcher. This method is optimal if the preparation of the base leaves much to be desired, and there is not enough time, money and desire to put the walls in order. The only thing that is needed is to bring the corners to 90 °. It is also important that the “banner” of the premises costs a little less than pasting – about 500 rubles / m2, taking into account the cost of consumables.
Buyer Tips
1. Choose solid colors and classic décor
Both manufacturers and buyers give preference to plain textile coverings, classic rosettes or medallions, genre scenes. You can’t experiment with such materials. And is it worth it? It is better to experiment with the interior if you have cheaper finishing materials at hand.
2. Calculate the number of wallpaper with a margin
Determining the required amount of textile wallpaper, as with the purchase of any other coverings with a pattern, be sure to take into account the stock for adjustment according to the rapport. Its value is always indicated on the accompanying label. However, the stock is needed even when there is no rapport. Experts recommend purchasing at least one additional meter.
3. Specify what the fabric was treated with
Textile wallpapers are subject to processing. For example, impregnations such as Teflon from DuPont and Scotchgard from 3M (both from the USA) make them more resistant to moisture, dust and dirt, and prevent the accumulation of static electricity. If, in the production, fabrics from Trevira CS polyester fibers from Trevira (Germany) were used, then the finishing material is more resistant to fire.
4. For a smooth surface, sacrifice naturalness
Everyone knows that natural materials are the highest quality and most environmentally friendly. But if you like uniform, smooth walls, it is better to choose a blended fabric. After all, the charm of 100% natural textile coatings is in their natural origin: silk thread is always uneven in thickness and color, and a distinctive feature of linen is knots.
