Hormone replacement therapy is able to reduce the risk factors that make up the metabolic syndrome associated with testosterone deficiency in men, said German scientists at the 94th annual meeting of the Endocrine Society in Houston.
The metabolic syndrome is a group of factors that increase the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. It is characterized by the simultaneous presence of at least three of the following factors: abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and elevated levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.
Testosterone deficiency is associated with decreased muscle and bone mass, depression, lack of energy, and decreased sex drive and potency. Moreover, the deficiency of this hormone is related to the individual components of the metabolic syndrome, even if there are no other complications at the same time.
Dr. Aksam A. Yassin from the Institute of Urology and Andrology in Hamburg reported a reduction in the symptoms of the metabolic syndrome from 56 to 30 percent. after 57 months of therapy to regulate hormone levels. In addition to lowering triglycerides, blood sugar and blood pressure, the subjects’ waist circumference decreased by an average of 11 centimeters.
Since 2004, scientists have been collecting data on 261 elderly patients who have been diagnosed with late hypogonadism (weakness or loss of testicular function). Participants received 1 gram of testosterone undecanoate on the first day of observation, after six weeks, and then every three months. The levels of hormones, glucose and triglycerides as well as blood pressure were measured at each visit. Patients were followed for an average of 4 years and three months (PAP).
