history of the holiday

On September 9, 1947, not only this professional holiday was born, but also the term that is still used today by everyone associated with computers.

That day at Harvard University Grace Hopper, one of the local scientists, was testing the first computing machine in the United States. Between the elements of the relay, she found a moth. It turned out that the machine was out of order because of this tiny insect.

Hopper noted this nuance in the technical diary, in confirmation of the words she glued a bug on the page, signing it with the word bug (from English – beetle). So she marked the beginning of the official registration of the “bug” in history. According to legend, that unfortunate moth became so famous that it was even transferred to the Museum of Computing Technology, where it is probably kept until now.

Today, people who find and eliminate the causes of a computer failure are called testers (from English – test).

In our country, the profession of a tester appeared relatively recently. The founders of the profession are quality specialists who check software for compliance with GOSTs.

Holiday traditions

Testers, like all “computer fraternity”, do not celebrate their professional holiday publicly. All their rich life is hidden from the eyes of others.

Usually, each team has its own traditions, including those related to holidays. On Tester Day, company employees receive incentives from management, those who excel are rewarded, and corporate parties are held. Also on this day, conferences are organized for specialists, where they exchange experience and knowledge.

In the middle of the last century, the Soviet scientist Sergei Lebedev created a small electronic calculating machine (MESM). By the way, “small” is loudly said: the equipment occupied 60 sq.m – half of the house where the developments were carried out. So in the USSR (and throughout continental Europe) the first computer with the function of storing information in its own memory appeared. And the first computer for home use appeared in 1983. It was called “Electronics BK-0010”. The development was based on a 16-bit microprocessor K1801VM1, this was a discovery even for the West.
