Tested on ourselves: we check “grandma’s” pregnancy tests

We found out whether it is possible to find out about pregnancy at home using iodine, potassium permanganate and other available means.

I prepared carefully for pregnancy. I went through all the examinations, bought ovulation tests so as not to miss day X. But I still worried that it would not work the first time.

There was not enough patience to wait for the delay, I wanted to know the result as early as possible. But most pharmacy pregnancy tests have a sensitivity of 20-25 mIU / ml. Such are able to show a reliable result only from the first day of a delay in menstruation. I had to look for strips with a sensitivity of 10-12 mMU / ml. These tests, according to the manufacturers, determine pregnancy as early as 7-10 days after the intended conception. The main thing is to use the first morning urine when the hCG (pregnancy hormone) content is at its maximum. To our delight, several of these tests have shown positive results.

I knew that there are many ways to determine pregnancy at home without pharmacy tests and a visit to the doctor. But she was skeptical of them. Now, in the seventh month of pregnancy, for the sake of interest, I decided to check whether the “grandmother’s” methods work. Armed with the jars and locked myself in the bathroom, I set about experimenting.

1st method: a drop of iodine

The essence of the test: drip a few drops of iodine into a jar with a glass of urine. If the iodine dissolves, there is no pregnancy. If it collects in a drop, the test is positive.

Result: in my case, iodine drops dissolved instantly. I was even upset and after a while, for the sake of the experiment, I “got” another jar of urine. However, the result is still the same – not pregnant. Fortunately, my huge belly suggests otherwise.

2nd method: iodine on paper

The essence of the test: Dip a strip of paper in urine, and then drip iodine onto it. In case of pregnancy, the piece of paper will turn dark purple. A negative result is a dark brown piece of paper.

Result: after the first unsuccessful experiment, there was no hope for iodine. But good luck, the strip really turned into a dark purple color. Cheers cheers!

3rd method: potassium permanganate

The essence of the test: dilute a little potassium permanganate in water until light pink. Mix the colored water with the same amount of urine. If pregnancy occurs, the mixture will turn white.

Result: I slightly poured potassium permanganate, so I had to dilute it with water for a long time to achieve a pink color. Then she poured urine and, lo and behold, the mixture immediately cleared up – not a hint of pink. Looks like the good old potassium permanganate isn’t lying.

4th method: boiling

The essence of the test: bring the urine to a boil in a transparent glass container. We remove from the fire. If a sediment appears, then pregnancy has occurred.

Result: I boiled a jar of urine in the microwave (fortunately, no one saw it). I was worried that a terrible smell would spread through the kitchen, but nothing of the kind happened. But a thick white sediment did appear. So the test isn’t lying.

5th method: soda

The essence of the test: Pour a teaspoon of soda into a jar of urine. The liquid began to hiss and bubble – no pregnancy. If the soda settles quietly at the bottom of the can, the “test” is positive. And all because the urine of a pregnant woman has less acidity, so soda does not give out any reactions.

Result: my spoon of soda in my urine didn’t bubble or hiss, no matter how hard I listened. The powder immediately settled at the bottom. This means that this method has also been tested.

6th method: toothpaste

The essence of the test: squeeze out a little toothpaste into an empty container, and then add a few drops of urine. We give it to “brew”. During pregnancy, after 3-5 minutes, the toothpaste will change color or begin to fizzle.

Result: but the toothpaste failed. I tried several brands of pasta, but none gave at least some kind of reaction.
